A young man based in the Rupaidih development block of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh has demonstrated that determination can rewrite anyone's professional destiny. After completing his ITI education, he faced continuous hurdles in landing a regular job. Instead of giving up or remaining idle, he decided to channel his efforts into agriculture, transforming vegetable cultivation into a profitable enterprise that now generates impressive annual returns and inspires farmers in surrounding areas.
The Journey From Job Hunt to Progressive Farming
Progressive farmer Sanjay Maurya shared that he spent a considerable amount of time chasing employment opportunities without success. Eventually, acting on family advice, he opted to venture into modern vegetable cultivation. He initially started farming on a modest plot of land, but as crop yields improved and market prices proved favorable, he steadily expanded his cultivated area year after year.
Adopting Modern Techniques Like Bed Planting
An ITI diploma holder, Sanjay Maurya explained that when career doors remained closed despite persistent efforts, he decided to test his fortune in farming. Presently, he cultivates okra across approximately one to one-and-a-half bighas of land. The inspiration to grow okra came from watching YouTube tutorials and observing neighboring farmers. While he initially relied on conventional farming methods, he has since switched to the bed method for growing okra. This modern technique makes irrigation and weeding significantly easier because adequate space is intentionally left between the rows.
Low Investment, High Returns, and Market Supply in Balrampur
According to Sanjay Maurya, cultivating one to one-and-a-half bighas requires an initial investment of roughly eight to ten thousand rupees. At present, his okra harvest yields an income ranging between sixty and seventy thousand rupees, though this figure fluctuates depending on prevailing market rates. He transports and supplies his fresh vegetables to the Balrampur vegetable market. Looking ahead, he plans to scale up his agricultural operations further because okra farming has proven to be a reliable and lucrative source of regular income.
