A broad surge in commodity demand across manufacturing, agriculture, and energy sectors lifted Indian Railways freight loading in September 2026. Total freight handled during the month rose to 135.35 million tonnes, outpacing the 127.52 million tonnes moved in September 2025 and translating into a year-on-year growth rate of 6.14 percent. Stronger movement of staples, building materials, and power plant fuel expanded both operational volume and monthly receipts for the national carrier.
Grains and Industrial Cargo Lead Commodity Expansion
Loading performance improved across several crucial freight categories throughout the month. Food grains registered the sharpest expansion with a 25 percent increase over the previous year. Clinker shipments followed with a 20 percent jump, while domestic container traffic advanced by 10 percent. Industrial raw materials and finished goods also maintained upward momentum, as coal loading rose by 9 percent, other miscellaneous goods grew by 8.2 percent, mineral oil moved up by 6 percent, finished steel expanded by 5.5 percent, and iron ore loading gained 5.2 percent.
Coal Rake Dispatches to Power Utilities Jump 11.6 Percent
Logistical focus remained centered on securing steady fuel supplies for electricity generation plants nationwide. Indian Railways dispatched an average of 443 coal rakes every day to power stations in September 2026, marking an 11.6 percent increase from the daily average of 397 rakes recorded in September 2025. This dedicated rake movement ensured that thermal generation facilities maintained stable fuel stockpiles to meet domestic and commercial electricity demands without supply disruptions.
Freight Revenue Climbs by Rs 1,266 Crore in September
Higher freight tonnage translated directly into substantial top-line gains for the railway network. Earning figures for September 2026 showed an addition of Rs 1,266 crore compared to the same month in the prior financial year, reflecting a 9.3 percent increase in monthly freight revenues. The broad participation of high-volume bulk commodities supported this revenue expansion across zonal divisions.
First-Half Freight Movement Reaches 833.7 Million Tonnes
Cumulative operational numbers for the first half of the financial year 2026-27, spanning April to September, confirmed sustained transport activity across the network. Indian Railways carried a total of 833.7 million tonnes of freight during the six-month period, which is 4.1 percent higher than the volume achieved in the corresponding months of the previous year. Revenue generated from freight traffic over the same April to September window grew by 3.7 percent, establishing steady operational footing heading into the second half of the fiscal year.
