In Semri village located within the Dinara block of Rohtas district, farmer Premchand Patel has carved out a remarkable agricultural success story by controlling temperatures to harvest high-quality mushrooms within a span of just 30 to 35 days. He points out that under standard conditions, the production cycle typically requires significantly more time, making his calibrated method a major efficiency booster.
Precise temperature control for optimal growth
Throughout the mushroom production cycle, Patel manages the ambient temperature in strict phases. During the initial 18 days or so, the temperature is carefully maintained between 23 to 26 degrees Celsius. In the subsequent 12 to 15 days, it is adjusted down to a cooler range of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, ensuring ideal development conditions for the crop.
Sustainable use of residual compost
Rather than discarding the spent compost left over after the mushroom harvest, Patel repurposes it directly into his fields. He utilizes this organic residue for cultivating paddy and wheat crops. This practice plays a vital role in preserving and sustaining the natural fertility and nutrient profile of the agricultural soil.
Shifting from job hunt to agri-business
After completing his formal education with a BSc Agriculture degree, Patel initially aspired to secure a salaried job. When those efforts did not yield success, he decided to pivot toward farming as a primary livelihood. Moving far beyond conventional farming methods, he chose to test his entrepreneurial spirit in the domain of commercial mushroom cultivation.
Formal training and practical experimentation
In the early stages, after gathering initial information independently, Patel underwent professional training at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Bikramganj, ATMA Rohtas, and Bihar Agricultural University in Sabour. Combining this structured training with continuous personal trials, he successfully refined his mushroom production techniques.
Recognition and rising local influence
Recognized for his persistent innovation in farming methods, Premchand Patel was honored as an innovative farmer by Bihar Agricultural University. His practical experiments and business model have now transformed into a major source of inspiration for other growers in the surrounding region.
Expanding markets and robust earnings
According to Patel, his mushrooms are marketed locally as well as distributed to larger urban centers including Patna, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and Ranchi and Daltonganj in Jharkhand. Demand spikes noticeably in local markets during peak seasons. Patel states that his combined earnings from mushroom production and farming now reach approximately 20 to 25 lakh rupees annually. Following this breakthrough, neighbouring farmers frequently visit him to seek guidance on modern farming and mushroom cultivation.
