Under this welfare initiative, infants born in state-run government medical facilities are being presented with a one-gram 22-karat gold ring. To launch the program, the Chief Minister traveled on a special flight to Madurai and inaugurated the scheme directly at the Government Rajaji Hospital.

During the launch event, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay personally handed over one-gram gold rings to 25 newborns. In a heartwarming moment, the Chief Minister held several infants in his arms and, upon the specific requests of their mothers, whispered names into the babies' ears to perform naming ceremonies. Children born in government hospitals starting from June 22, 2026, are eligible to receive the benefits of this ambitious government scheme.
Fulfilling a Campaign Pledge
The concept is rooted in a regional cultural tradition where a maternal uncle traditionally brings gifts upon the birth of a child. During his election campaign, portraying himself as a brother to the women of Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister had promised that his administration would gift a one-gram gold ring to every newborn delivered in a government hospital. For the initial phase of this initiative, the state government has procured a total of 1.28 lakh gold rings.
Transparency and Financial Outlay
To ensure complete transparency in the implementation of the scheme, the rings have been securely packaged, and a unique serial number is engraved on each individual ring. The state government has allocated an annual expenditure of 755.83 crore for this welfare program, underlining its commitment to supporting families who rely on public healthcare infrastructure.
Eligibility Criteria and Registration
To qualify for the gold ring gift, mothers must be permanent residents of the state. They are also required to have registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation system and obtained a Reproductive and Child Health ID. The distribution of the gold rings across the state commenced immediately following the formal inauguration.
Distribution Centers and Daily Targets
To manage the large-scale distribution efficiently, a total of 107 dedicated centers have been established across the state. Each of these centers has been assigned a daily target of gifting rings to 100 infants to ensure smooth execution and wide coverage.
Timeline and Venue Adjustments
The scheme was originally scheduled to be rolled out on September 15, but it was subsequently postponed and rescheduled for September 28. Additionally, the launch venue was shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. With the statewide rollout taking effect, eligible newborns across all public health institutions are now covered under one of the administration's flagship poll promises.
