The state government of Uttar Pradesh is expanding its livelihood generation initiatives by building on the foundation laid by the One District One Product program. In Amethi district, authorities have now rolled out the One District One Cuisine scheme aimed at creating self-employment opportunities for local youth while promoting traditional culinary heritage. By encouraging unemployed individuals to apply and produce local food specialties on a commercial scale, the administration seeks to blend traditional recipes with modern business techniques, giving a boost to the regional economy.
Three Traditional Delicacies Selected for Commercial Scaling
Under this culinary development initiative, three distinctive food items from Amethi have been chosen: Samosa, Jaggery Kheer (Gud Ki Kheer), and Badi Poori. The district administration plans to bring these traditional preparations into mainstream business by connecting artisans and aspiring entrepreneurs directly with market distribution channels. The goal is to elevate these regional dishes from domestic kitchens into scalable commercial enterprises that generate consistent income for local families.
Emphasis on Branding, Packaging, and Quality Compliance
Highlighting the scope of this project, Dr. Anshuman, an expert from the Indian Institute of Packaging in Lucknow, noted that while the Samosa market is already well established and growing rapidly, items like Jaggery Kheer and Badi Poori lack structured commercial production in local markets. Consequently, awareness drives are being conducted to guide entrepreneurs on standardizing recipes, developing appropriate food packaging, and establishing effective brand positioning. Additionally, the department will facilitate food safety compliance, licensing, and mandatory registration to help businesses operate legally and meet hygiene standards.
Comprehensive Training Programs and Government Subsidies
To ensure long-term viability, participating entrepreneurs will undergo structured training covering the technicalities of food processing, quality control, and business operational management. Along with hands-on skill development, the government will extend financial subsidies to eligible entrepreneurs. This capital assistance aims to lower entry barriers, improve production infrastructure, and maximize employment creation for the youth across the district.
Replicating ODOP Success to Expand Regional Identity
Abhay Kumar सुमन, Deputy Commissioner of Industries, pointed out that Amethi has already seen positive momentum under the One District One Product program, where moonj craft artisans have successfully scaled their operations. Applying a similar operational model, the One District One Cuisine initiative will provide practical processing training to candidates. By equipping local youth with processing and marketing skills, the government intends to establish sustainable small-scale units while taking the distinct culinary identity of Amethi to a state-wide audience.
