Shifting from traditional methods
Pawan Kumar Maurya, a forward-thinking farmer based in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, has redefined his agricultural approach. He previously focused on conventional crops like wheat and paddy, but found the returns were not commensurate with the hard work involved. To improve his financial future, he decided to pivot toward vegetable production, specifically choosing to cultivate okra.
The power of scientific farming
After completing his studies, Pawan Kumar Maurya chose to make farming his primary career rather than seeking conventional employment. Drawing inspiration from his father, who was also a farmer, he combined his childhood experience in the fields with modern technical knowledge. Currently, he is professionally cultivating the Namdhari variety of okra across approximately 5 bighas of land.
Implementing the bed method
A key factor in his success is the implementation of the 'bed method.' Pawan Kumar Maurya prepares raised beds in his fields for sowing. This technique ensures stronger plant growth and a longer fruiting period. Furthermore, the space between the beds simplifies irrigation, which significantly reduces the risk of waterlogging and prevents root decay, keeping the crops healthy.
Financial viability
According to TrendKia, the cost of cultivating okra on 1 acre of land is approximately 15,000 to 20,000 rupees. Pawan Kumar Maurya explains that if the produce reaches the market at a good price, it is entirely possible to earn lakhs of rupees from just 1 acre. He is now planning to expand the area dedicated to his okra cultivation to further increase his annual income.
