The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is proving to be a transformative initiative for households across India, fostering clean energy adoption while creating a new avenue of financial savings. According to figures released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Tuesday, more than 12 lakh families utilized the scheme during the financial year 2024-25 to generate surplus electricity that exceeded their daily household consumption. By supplying this extra power back to the grid, these households collectively earned Rs 421 crore, which translates to an average annual income of roughly 3,500 rupees per participating family.
Electricity Bills Plunge to Zero for 19 Lakh Households
The financial relief delivered by the government program has brought tangible benefits to millions of citizens struggling with steep utility expenses. The ministry highlighted that July 2026 witnessed a record-breaking milestone with 5.06 lakh rooftop solar systems installed in homes during that single month, marking the highest monthly deployment figures to date. Furthermore, financial aid totaling Rs 28,024 crore has been successfully disbursed directly to eligible beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer or DBT mechanisms. Consequently, these synchronized efforts have resulted in zero electricity bills for approximately 19 lakh households nationwide.
Surpassing Five Million Rooftop Solar Installations Nationwide
Data compiled by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy indicates that the nationwide count of rooftop solar installations has now crossed the 50.06 lakh mark. Officials noted in an official statement that this monumental milestone was achieved in just over two years since the formal launch of the initiative. To put this rapid expansion into perspective, only 7.94 lakh rooftop solar plants had been set up across the country in the preceding ten-year period combined, underscoring the unprecedented momentum generated by the current framework.
Solar Plant Deployment Speed Accelerates More Than Threefold
Backed by an overall financial outlay of 75,021 करोड़ रुपये, the capacity expansion for rooftop solar infrastructure has witnessed exponential growth. Statistical tracking shows that the pace of installing these solar units surged by 3.2 times over the trailing nine months. Daily installation rates climbed dramatically from an average of roughly 5,038 rooftop solar plants per day in October 2025 to an impressive 16,328 units per day by July 2026.
Expanding Vendor Networks and Government Building Solar Integration
Beyond residential rooftops, the initiative has spurred substantial economic activity by creating a robust ecosystem of 34,219 registered vendors, out of which 29,469 remain actively operational. To support this massive scaling up, specialized training has been imparted to over 2.32 lakh individuals. In parallel with residential adoption, the push to green public infrastructure has seen solar installations completed across 1.06 lakh government buildings specifically identified and earmarked by central and state authorities.
