Bank branches across India are scheduled to remain closed for up to 14 days in August 2026 according to the official holiday calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The closures encompass national holidays such as Independence Day, multiple regional and religious festivals, state specific observances, alongside regular weekend breaks including Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays. Account holders intending to visit their local bank branches for essential financial tasks such as cheque clearance, demand draft issuance, or account updates are advised to check the schedule beforehand to ensure seamless transactions.
Breakdown of Weekend Closures in August 2026
Out of the total 14 non-working days during August 2026, 7 days account for routine weekend closures that apply uniformly across all public and private commercial banks nationwide. Five Sundays fall on August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23, and August 30. Additionally, in accordance with standard banking rules, branches will observe closures on the second Saturday falling on August 8 and the fourth Saturday falling on August 22. These weekend holidays remain standardized across all states and union territories in India.
State-Wise List of Festival and Regional Holidays
Beyond the mandatory weekend breaks, several regional and religious festivals will lead to bank branch shutdowns in specific states. As per the RBI guidelines, regional holidays depend on local government declarations and cultural festivities
- August 4: Banks in Tripura will remain closed for Ker Puja celebrations.
- August 8: Sikkim observes a bank holiday for Tendong Lho Rum Faat, which also aligns with the second Saturday of the month.
- August 13: Branches in Manipur will be closed in observance of Patriot Day.
- August 15: All commercial and cooperative banks nationwide will observe a full holiday for Independence Day.
- August 19: Tripura banks will be closed for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Jayanti.
- August 25: Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will observe bank holidays on account of Milad-un-Nabi, First Onam, and Milad-i-Sherif.
- August 26: Widespread closures for Eid-e-Milad, Barawafat, and Thiruvonam will affect banks in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, New Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
- August 28: Branches in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh will remain closed for Raksha Bandhan, Pang-Lhabsol, Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti, and Ayyankali Jayanti.
Continuous Availability of Digital Banking Operations
While physical branch operations will be restricted on specified dates, customers can continue carrying out critical money management tasks through automated digital platforms. Services such as Internet Banking, Mobile Banking applications, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transfers, and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cash withdrawals will function without interruption 24/7. Account holders requiring in-person services such as loan processing or document verifications should plan their branch visits on active working days to prevent unnecessary delays.
