Jio Platforms received an emphatic reception from market participants as its initial public offering opened for public subscription on Wednesday, October 21. Bidders demonstrated rapid demand across categories, pushing the total subscription level beyond three times the available size before the close of the first session. Against an offer volume of 19.75 crore equity shares, market participants placed bids for an aggregate of 59.12 crore shares. The charge was predominantly led by large institutional desks, establishing robust momentum for the remainder of the subscription window.
Institutional Demand Surges Across Key Categories
A closer look at the category breakdown highlights exceptional bidding within the Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB) segment. Institutional investors bid aggressively, subscribing their assigned quota 9 times over by the close of trading. Non-Institutional Investors (NII) also surpassed their baseline allocation, registering a subscription rate of 1.58 times. The employee reservation quota saw healthy interest as well, clocking 1.30 times subscription, while the portion set aside for existing shareholders received 1.38 times bids. In contrast, retail individual investors displayed a measured start, filling 0.68 times of their earmarked book on the opening day.
Domestic Financial Institutions Outpace Foreign Bidders
A notable aspect of the day's bidding pattern was the decisive lead taken by domestic financial institutions over foreign institutional counterparts. Official bidding data reveals that domestic financial institutions submitted bids for 25.02 crore shares, underscoring substantial conviction from local balance sheets. Foreign institutional investors placed bids for 14.99 crore shares during the same period. Adding further depth to the domestic tally, mutual fund houses submitted bids covering 3.10 crore shares. This heavy institutional accumulation provided substantial cushion to the book right from the opening bell.
Retail Momentum and Bidding Schedule Ahead
While the retail investor tranche stood at 0.68 times subscription at the end of the opening session, this trend aligns with standard primary market behavior where smaller participants evaluate overall demand before committing funds. The public issue of Jio Platforms remains open through October 23, 2026, providing prospective bidders additional time to submit their applications. Market observers anticipate an uptick in retail and non-institutional activity over the final two sessions, which could significantly alter the cumulative subscription tally before the issue officially winds down.
