The Indian aviation sector could soon witness the induction of Russian-built aircraft as the country's airlines explore new fleet options. The United Aircraft Corporation of Russia has showcased its latest passenger aircraft models at the ongoing Innoprom India exhibition in New Delhi. These planes have been manufactured entirely within Russia and are being presented specifically by keeping the operational requirements of Indian carriers in mind.
Three New Aircraft Models Unveiled
During the exhibition, the United Aircraft Corporation alongside the United Engine Corporation introduced three distinct aircraft models. These include the IL-114-300, the SJ-100, and the MC-21. Each of these planes possesses unique specifications and is engineered to be deployed across different categories of domestic and regional flight routes.
The Turboprop IL-114-300 for Regional Connectivity
The IL-114-300 is a turboprop aircraft that has been meticulously engineered especially for regional flight operations. Its most prominent operational capability is the ability to operate efficiently from smaller airports and limited runway lengths. Consequently, this aircraft could prove immensely useful under India's UDAN scheme for connecting smaller towns and remote cities to the mainstream aviation network.
The SJ-100 for Short-Haul Routes
Meanwhile, the SJ-100 has been constructed primarily for short-distance flight operations. It features a seating capacity designed to accommodate up to 103 passengers comfortably. The aircraft is equipped with several vital systems, including the Russian-made PD-8 engine. This plane can serve as an invaluable asset on routes connecting major metropolitan hubs with smaller towns and districts.
The Next-Generation MC-21 for Medium Ranges
The third aircraft on display is the MC-21, which represents a new generation of medium-range aircraft. It incorporates the advanced PD-14 engine along with cutting-edge aviation technology. This model is well-suited for deployment on high-density and longer-distance domestic air corridors across the country.
Bilateral discussions regarding the introduction of these aircraft in India have been progressing steadily. Regarding the IL-114-300, productive dialogues have taken place over the past six months. The corporation intends to go beyond merely selling finished aircraft, aiming instead to establish local production lines and deep technological partnerships within India.
Local Manufacturing and Future Outlook
Specifically, negotiations concerning the domestic production of the SJ-100 under a licensing agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited have advanced past the 80 percent completion mark. Formal signing of this agreement is anticipated in the near future. The United Aircraft Corporation remains optimistic that the inaugural contract for the SJ-100 with an Indian operator could materialize during Aero India 2027.
The United Aircraft Corporation operates as a division of Russia's Rostec State Corporation and collaborates closely with renowned aviation entities such as Sukhoi, MiG, Ilyushin, and Tupolev.
