The intense legal conflict surrounding the estate and family trust of the late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor appears to be moving toward a resolution. Expressing optimism over the progress made during alternative dispute resolution proceedings, the apex court noted that discussions between the family members are proceeding in a constructive direction. After examining the latest mediation report, the bench observed that all parties involved are very close to reaching a mutually agreeable settlement.
Mediation Window Extended Until November 2
To facilitate a smooth and peaceful end to the prolonged conflict, the Supreme Court has permitted the ongoing mediation process to continue until November 2. The court specifically ordered that the remuneration fees for the mediator shall be discharged directly from the funds of the RK Family Trust. While the bench expressed high hopes that the family would settle the matter amicably before the deadline, it clarified that should the mediation fail, all parties retain the right to pursue their respective remedies under the law.
The RK Family Trust at the Center of Contention
Following the passing of industrialist Sanjay Kapoor in June 2025, a major disagreement erupted over the distribution and control of his assets valued at approximately Rs 30,000 crore, along with substantial business holdings. The primary bone of contention in this dispute is the RK Family Trust, which was established in 2017. Sanjay Kapoor's mother, Rani Kapoor, challenged the formation of the trust, alleging that it was created without her awareness or explicit approval and that family properties were wrongfully placed into it. Claiming the entity was legally invalid, she petitioned the Delhi High Court seeking its dissolution.
Conversely, Sanjay Kapoor's wife, Priya Sachdev Kapoor, maintained that the trust was set up in complete compliance with established legal regulations to protect the rights of its beneficiaries. Priya Kapoor had also issued a notice seeking the removal of Rani Kapoor from her position as a trustee, citing unwanted interference in trust management that could jeopardize beneficiary interests.
Marriage with Karisma Kapoor and Provisions for Children
The inheritance matter also encompasses the financial rights of Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Kapoor, the children from Sanjay Kapoor's marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor. The couple wed in 2003 and subsequently parted ways in 2016. During his lifetime, Sanjay Kapoor had put in place several financial arrangements to ensure the long-term security and well-being of Samaira and Kiaan. However, following his death in June 2025, competing claims arose between his second wife Priya Kapoor, mother Rani Kapoor, and the children regarding their respective shares in the estate.
Legal Journey from Delhi High Court to Supreme Court
As accusations escalated, the litigation moved from the Delhi High Court to the Supreme Court. Recognizing the sensitive nature of the intra-family conflict, the top court deemed mediation the most appropriate course of action. To guide the negotiations, the Supreme Court appointed former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the neutral mediator. Proceedings conducted under his guidance have yielded encouraging progress, leading the court to express confidence that a final settlement is within reach.
