Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT company, has decided through its subsidiary Hyperwolt to build a large scale artificial intelligence data centre campus in Hyderabad. The company has already secured 264 acres of land from the state government for this purpose, and announced on Saturday that up to Rs 70,000 crore will be invested in the project.
264 acres, one gigawatt of capacity
In a filing to stock exchanges, Hyperwolt said the campus being built in Hyderabad will have capacity of up to one gigawatt (GW), a scale no data centre campus in the country has reached so far. Training and running large AI models requires enormous computing power, which is why technology companies around the world have been racing to build data centres of this scale. The company said the project will create several thousand direct and indirect jobs in the region. Hyperwolt and its partners will invest up to Rs 70,000 crore in building and operating this infrastructure. The company clarified that the entire campus will not come up at once, but will be developed in phases based on customer demand and technology requirements.
Telangana government calls it a historic decision
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy called the project historic for both the state and the country. He said it shows Hyderabad is now at the forefront of the global AI revolution, backed by a strong focus on infrastructure. The Chief Minister said, "This is the decade of AI." He added that access to AI models and computing is rapidly becoming part of public infrastructure, and having such large computing capacity in Telangana gives the state an edge over others.
A design built around green energy and separate water systems
The company said the campus will be built around design principles such as the use of green energy and a separate water management system. Data centres of this scale consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, which is why sustainable practices have been built into the design from the start. TCS CEO and MD K Krithivasan said, "This initiative advances the company's infrastructure-to-intelligence strategy." That means TCS will connect this AI-ready infrastructure with its cloud, AI and enterprise capabilities. The company said that once the project becomes fully operational, it will be the country's largest AI infrastructure project.
The deal was struck in Davos in January
Telangana IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu said the project was agreed upon between the Chief Minister and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran during the World Economic Forum in Davos in January this year. Talks between government officials, Hyperwolt and TCS continued after that, and work began as soon as the land was secured.
