A highly efficient and budget-friendly solution gaining popularity is 'Brahmastra,' a natural bio-pesticide crafted entirely from readily available organic materials. Rather than treating an active pest infestation, this traditional concoction serves as a powerful preventive barrier. A Farmer's Success with Organic Pesticides
Highlighting the practical success of this method, Lakshmi Kant Pradhan, a young farmer residing in Milarabad village of Chhattisgarh, incorporates this homemade mixture into his organic farming routine. Pradhan applies the remedy two to three times throughout the crop cycle as a precautionary measure. According to him, regular preventive applications successfully safeguard crops against devastating pests and diseases, including stem borers, neck blast, sheath blight, aphids, and mites. To enhance the potency of this organic blend and achieve superior field outcomes, water-soluble neem oil can also be integrated into the final solution.
Selecting the Ideal Foliage
The preparation of Brahmastra relies on utilizing five to ten distinct varieties of leaves that are naturally avoided by grazing livestock like goats and cows. The select group of foliage typically includes leaves from neem, custard apple, calotropis (aak), castor, karanj, and wood apple (bel) trees. Among these, neem leaves are used in the largest proportion due to their potent insect-repelling properties. Using plants that animals instinctively avoid ensures that the resulting mixture contains natural compounds highly toxic or repellent to common crop insects.
Step-by-Step Preparation Method
The method of preparing this biological pesticide is straightforward and requires no sophisticated equipment. To begin, fresh leaves of the chosen plants are thoroughly crushed or chopped into small pieces. These leaves are then placed in a large earthen pot containing approximately 10 liters of cow urine. The mixture is heated on a steady flame until it reaches a boil, a process repeated about four times to ensure the active compounds from the leaves thoroughly infuse into the liquid. Once boiled, the solution is left to cool completely before being carefully strained through a clean cloth, rendering it ready for field application.
Dosage, Usage, and Cost Efficiency
In terms of dosage and economic viability, Brahmastra is remarkably efficient. Pradhan notes that merely 100 milliliters of this liquid is sufficient for a single standard spray tank. On a larger scale, approximately 1 to 1.5 liters of this solution is required to treat one acre of agricultural land. Because the ingredients are sourced directly from the farm and village surroundings, the overall production cost remains virtually zero, offering smallholder farmers an excellent way to slash input costs while maintaining crop health.
