Monsoon rains lashing Chhattisgarh as the season nears its end have unleashed widespread disruption, creating flood-like conditions across several districts. Swollen rivers and streams fueled by continuous downpours have inundated low-lying settlements, severely impeding daily life. Key roads, pathways, and culverts have vanished underwater, cutting off connectivity and halting transportation. The meteorological department has warned that wet weather is likely to persist in parts of the state over the coming days, keeping local administrations and residents on high alert.
Severe Floods Grip Raipur and Surrounding Districts
The situation remains critical in the state capital Raipur, alongside districts such as Kanker, Mahasamund, Dantewada, Jagdalpur, Dhamtari, and Gariaband. Authorities are closely monitoring waterlogging and flood-hit zones, issuing strict advisories urging citizens to steer clear of overflowing rivers, streams, and waterlogged areas.
Main Bridge at Mahadev Ghat Submerges in Raipur
In the capital city of Raipur, the Kharun River is running in spate, putting nearby neighborhoods at immediate risk of inundation. With residential areas on the brink of going under, floodwaters are surging into homes, leaving residents displaced and scrambling to abandon their properties. Reviewing the crisis on the ground, Vikas Upadhyay visited the affected site and stated that floods have erupted in numerous areas and that government arrangements have completely failed. He remarked that after many years, water levels have risen to such an extent that the inadequacy of local preparations has been fully exposed. The main bridge at Mahadev Ghat, which connects the capital to Durg, has completely submerged. The closure of the bridge has severed traffic movement, breaking connectivity between the capital and hundreds of villages, including Amaleshwar. Local residents reported that it has been nearly 10 years since the entire bridge went completely underwater. The water level at Mahadev Ghat continues to rise steadily. Authorities have installed barricades and appealed to the public to maintain a safe distance due to the mounting pressure of the water.
Kanker and Mahasamund Witness Rising Water Levels
In Kanker district, continuous rainfall has caused the water level in the Dudhawa reservoir to rise rapidly. The reservoir has reached 97.78 percent of its total capacity, recording an inflow of 28,706 cusecs of water, while 16,762 cusecs are being discharged through four gates of the dam. Meanwhile, two days of uninterrupted rain in Mahasamund have thrown normal life completely out of gear. The downpour has triggered a sharp surge in the Mahanadi River, alongside several overflowing streams. An alert has been issued by the administration for roughly three dozen villages situated along the banks of the Mahanadi. In Bamhani, a government liquor shop was surrounded by floodwaters, trapping two security guards inside. The trapped personnel recorded a video to communicate their precarious situation. Upon receiving the information, a home guard team rushed to the spot and successfully rescued both security guards. The administration continues to monitor vulnerable areas closely amid the persistent rainfall.
Dantewada and Jagdalpur Face Severe Deluge
In Dantewada, relentless rains have caused the Indravati River to swell significantly. The rising waters flooded the headquarters of the 195th Battalion of the CRPF located in Barsur, trapping the camp on all sides and creating a difficult predicament for the personnel stationed there. Thanks to the alertness of the troops, all personnel inside the camp were safely evacuated. Following the incident, an SDRF team was deployed at the location, with security forces and the administration maintaining a high state of alert. Jagdalpur district is witnessing an equally grim display of flood fury. The ancient Shiva temple at the historic Mahadev Ghat in Jagdalpur city has fallen victim to the deluge, with the entire pathway from the temple steps onward completely submerged. Floodwaters have breached nearby residential houses, compelling residents to abandon their belongings and flee their homes to save their lives. Fearing the floods, locals spent the entire night awake.
