The grand celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi in Hyderabad reached their pinnacle with the successful immersion of the iconic 69-foot tall Khairatabad Ganesh idol into the waters of Hussain Sagar lake. The final proceedings were completed smoothly on the afternoon of Friday, September 25, 2026, at approximately 2:25 p.m. Thousands of devotees gathered along the banks of the lake and on the streets of the city to witness the farewell journey of the massive deity, which progressed through the city under a grey, overcast sky. This annual spectacle represents one of the largest public gatherings in the region, demanding meticulous preparation from both civil and police authorities.
Overcoming Technical Delays in the Farewell Procession
The morning of Ananta Chaturdasi witnessed an immense wave of faith as devotees gathered at the installation site in Khairatabad. However, the start of the final journey faced a temporary delay. The slow progress of welding the colossal 69-foot idol securely onto the wheeled transport trolley pushed back the schedule. This intricate procedure, which usually begins in the pre-dawn hours, required extra precision to ensure structural safety. Once the welding was complete and devotees paid their final respects, the massive idol began rolling through the decorated streets. Families occupied every available vantage point on rooftops and balconies to catch a glimpse, showering flower petals as the procession slowly moved forward.
Comprehensive Security Grid and Surveillance Network
To manage the lakhs of people participating in the procession, the local administration deployed a massive security apparatus. Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar announced that approximately 20,000 police personnel were stationed on bandobust duty across key locations. To maintain strict surveillance along the main procession routes, authorities installed around 10,000 CCTV cameras. These cameras were connected directly to the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) located in Banjara Hills, enabling real-time monitoring of the crowd. Additionally, Telangana’s mounted police were deployed to manage the massive crowd surrounding the Khairatabad Ganesh procession.
Official Inspections and Aerial Surveillance

Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar conducted an aerial inspection of the immersion procession in several parts of the city on Friday afternoon. He was joined in this aerial monitoring by Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Yadav, DGP C.V. Anand, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Simultaneously, the Commissioner of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), A.V. Ranganath, visited the Control Room on Tank Bund to inspect the ongoing immersion. He actively monitored the agency’s specialized boat patrol on Hussain Sagar and directed officials to maintain seamless coordination with other departments until the final idol was safely immersed, ensuring any water-bound emergencies could be tackled instantly.
Massive Civic Infrastructure and Crane Deployment
The state government put in place extensive infrastructure to handle the thousands of idols brought for immersion from different parts of the twin cities. Hyderabad in-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar extended his warm greetings to all devotees and mandap organizers while emphasizing safety precautions. He confirmed that the administration had installed 110 static cranes and 170 mobile cranes across various baby ponds, lakes, and other designated water bodies in the region.
In total, the Telangana Police listed 47 lakes and ponds across Hyderabad to facilitate the immersion process. These water bodies are spread across multiple zones, including Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Charminar, Golconda, Khairatabad, and Secunderabad. To facilitate the movement of millions of devotees, public transport authorities announced extended schedules. Hyderabad Metro Rail and South Central Railway (SCR) operated special, extended MMTS services throughout the night of Friday, September 25, stretching into the early hours of Saturday, September 26. Meanwhile, strict traffic rules were implemented to keep the procession routes clear. Regular vehicular traffic, excluding those transporting Ganesh idols, was completely banned along the main procession route starting from 6:00 a.m. on September 25 until 10:00 a.m. on September 26.
Waste Management and Eco-Friendly Initiatives
With massive crowds visiting the immersion routes, keeping the city clean was a major priority. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in partnership with the Telangana and Andhra Plastic Manufacturers Association (TAAPMA), organized a large-scale public awareness campaign along NTR Marg in Khairatabad. The campaign focused on educating devotees about sorting waste at its source and practicing the responsible collection and disposal of plastic waste. Devotees were instructed to avoid littering and deposit plastic materials only at designated collection centers. A dedicated training facility was inaugurated for this purpose by GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan and Additional Commissioner B. Santosh.
Cyberabad Digital Assistance and Immersion Progress
To help residents locate the nearest designated water bodies for immersion, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation launched a digital helper. Devotees can access the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation's designated portal to find suitable immersion points nearby. Highlighting the scale of the festival, official records indicated that a total of 1,03,149 Ganesh idols had already been immersed across the Cyberabad limits as of Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar urged all organizers to expedite the movement of idols, citing potential rain forecasts, with the goal of concluding all immersions by Saturday morning.
