Normal life has been severely disrupted across Chhattisgarh as incessant heavy rainfall, triggered by the effects of cyclone Arnab, has continued for well over 48 hours. The relentless downpour has caused rivers and streams to swell dangerously across multiple parts of the state, throwing daily routines completely out of gear.
Bastar Division Bears the Maximum Brunt
The impact of the cyclonic storm is most visible and severe in the Bastar division. Districts including Bastar, Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur, and Narayanpur are facing extreme weather conditions where torrential downpours have pushed rivers and rivulets above danger marks, severing connectivity in several areas.
All Schools Shut on September 26
In view of the continuous heavy downpour and keeping the safety of students paramount, the state government has taken a major decision. A holiday has been declared for all government, private, and aided schools across Chhattisgarh on September 26. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai shared this information through a post on the social media platform X, emphasizing that the safety of students is of utmost priority. The Chief Minister appealed to parents to keep children indoors, stay alert, and avoid taking any unnecessary journeys.
Gariaband Route Blocked and Reservoir Water Released
The situation has turned alarming in Gariaband district due to heavy rains. The Sargi nullah near Fingeshwar is in spate, with floodwater flowing directly over the bridge. This has completely blocked the Rajim-Mahasamund state highway, resulting in long queues of stranded vehicles on both sides of the road. To monitor the situation closely, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and the 112 emergency team are present at the spot. Furthermore, 20,000 cusecs of water have been released from the Sikasar reservoir, causing water levels to rise steadily. The administration has consequently issued a high alert in the region.
Village Cut Off in Sukma with Families Trapped
In Mungeli district as well, relentless rainfall has caused water bodies to overflow, disrupting normal routines. Meanwhile, floods have wreaked havoc in Kurmiras village under Chhindgarh in Sukma district. The village has turned into an island after being surrounded by water from all sides. Continuous rains have cut off all external access to the settlement. Approximately 40 to 45 people belonging to 19 families are trapped amidst the floodwaters, posing a severe crisis for the local villagers and necessitating immediate rescue and relief operations.
