The Raipur Development Authority (RDA) has unveiled a major urban infrastructure initiative in the capital of Chhattisgarh, combining a new four-lane expressway with a planned residential township across 475.6 acres. Stretching from Shankar Nagar to Jora, the proposed Expressway-2 covers 192.451 hectares of land. The initiative aims to prevent unchecked construction along the corridor while establishing modern civic facilities. Once completed, the project will significantly shorten travel times to Swami Vivekananda Airport and Nava Raipur while relieving severe traffic bottlenecks on existing arterial roads.
A 14.70-Kilometer Four-Lane Corridor Along the Railway Line
The proposed 45-meter-wide Expressway-2 will run parallel to the Waltair railway line for a total distance of 14.70 kilometers. It will provide direct and seamless connectivity for residents of Mowa, Pandri, Shankar Nagar, Khamhardih, Kachna, and Labhandi traveling toward Jora, Nava Raipur, and the airport. Commuters currently spend more than half an hour negotiating inner-city traffic to travel from Mowa to Jora. The new route is projected to cut down this travel time to just 10 to 12 minutes, saving motorists 15 to 20 minutes and enabling them to bypass numerous traffic signals.
Comprehensive Planned Township Across 896 Khasras
The accompanying colony project spans 896 khasras located across Labhandi, Jora, Shankar Nagar, and Kachna. Out of the designated area, approximately 20 hectares consist of government-owned land, while 170 hectares belong to private landowners. To ensure systematic growth along the expressway, RDA plans to construct fully upgraded roads, dedicated service lanes, stormwater drains, and a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The master-planned layout will prevent haphazard encroachments and build sustainable civic infrastructure for future residents.
Rs 550 Crore Sanctioned with Tender Issuance Planned in Six Months
The state government has sanctioned a total budget of Rs 550 crore for the execution of the expressway and township initiative. The RDA Board formally approved the proposal on July 2, following which an official notification was issued on Monday after the preliminary survey concluded. Landowners in the designated zone have been given a 15-day window to file any claims or objections. RDA officials expect to complete the engineering drawings, structural designs, and detailed maps within two months, after which the tendering process will begin, with formal tenders expected to be issued within six months.
Over 5 Lakh Residents Across 14 Municipal Wards to Benefit
A survey conducted by the Public Works Department (PWD) highlights that more than 5 lakh residents across 14 municipal wards of Raipur stand to benefit directly from this project. By diverting airport-bound and long-distance commuter traffic away from congested routes, the new expressway will ease severe vehicular pressure on Telibandha and Pandri roads. This alternative corridor is expected to reduce fuel consumption, streamline daily commutes, and transform urban mobility across key residential and commercial hubs in the region.
