A heart-wrenching incident highlighting exceptional human courage and a tragic loss has emerged from the Sarguja district of Chhattisgarh. A young man and a woman who arrived from Kerala as tourists were swept away due to a sudden rise in the water level of the Ghughuta river flowing through the region. As both individuals began drifting rapidly in the strong currents, shouting for help, a local resident named Shamsuddin Khan, who works in the market business, didn't think twice about his own safety. Upon hearing their cries, he grabbed a rope from his vehicle and rushed to save them, showcasing an extraordinary display of humanity. While he successfully managed to pull the woman to safety after a relentless struggle, the young man vanished into the waters, and his body was recovered later.
Shamsuddin Rushed to the River with a Rope from His Pickup
Shamsuddin Khan stated that he was busy with household chores when some young boys arrived and shouted to inform him that a boy and a girl were being swept down the river. Without wasting a single moment, Shamsuddin ran out and rushed toward the riverbank carrying a rope kept in his pickup truck. He explained that because of his involvement in market-related work, a rope was always readily available in his vehicle, which enabled him to act swiftly in the emergency situation.
Chased the Flow for Two Kilometers to Pull the Woman Out
According to Shamsuddin, when he reached the river, he initially caught a glimpse of the young man's hand, but within moments, the youth vanished underwater. On the other side, the girl was struggling to stay afloat and trying to swim through the fierce current. Shamsuddin threw the rope toward her multiple times, but due to the rapid flow and panic, she failed to grab it. As she was carried past the bridge by the current, Shamsuddin kept running alongside the riverbank with the rope in hand. After continuous attempts, she finally managed to catch the rope on the sixth or seventh try. Applying all his strength, Shamsuddin pulled her out of the river, having chased and run alongside the water for nearly one to two kilometers.
The Woman Immediately Asked About Her Companion Sibhu
Upon being pulled out of the rushing river, the young woman was in a state of severe shock and terror. According to Shamsuddin, she repeatedly pleaded with him to save her companion Sibhu, but the young man was nowhere to be seen at that point. Later, during the search and rescue operations, the lifeless body of the youth was recovered from the water.
People Were Merely Shouting from Above the Bridge
Shamsuddin pointed out that several people were present at the scene during the incident, but they stood atop the bridge merely shouting instead of descending to help. He expressed that had some of those individuals stepped down to assist, he would not have been alone in the grueling effort, and perhaps the life of the young man could have also been saved.
Religion or Caste Never Crossed His Mind During the Rescue
When asked whether he checked the caste or religion of the victims before extending help, Shamsuddin made it clear that such thoughts never crossed his mind during the crisis. His sole focus and singular thought at that critical moment was to save the lives of the two human beings drowning in the turbulent river. Addressing the praises he has been receiving on social media, Shamsuddin remarked that while he appreciates the gratitude and appreciation from people, his heart remains heavy with sorrow over not being able to save the young man's life.
