A trip that used to eat up the better part of a day can now be finished before your tea goes cold. China has opened its new Xi'an-Shiyan high-speed bullet train service, which races along at 350 km/h. Beyond saving travellers hours of time, the new line is expected to give a direct boost to trade, tourism and industry.
The high-speed railway line stretches roughly 257 kilometres and has been engineered to handle a top speed of 350 km/h. Fuxing bullet trains, counted among China's most advanced, will run on this route.
Hours of distance shrunk to minutes
Before this line opened, reaching Shiyan from Xi'an on conventional trains took more than six hours. That same stretch will now be covered in about one hour. On top of that, the trip from Xi'an to Wuhan will take just 2 hours and 41 minutes instead of the earlier 4.5 hours.
Over 90 percent built on bridges and tunnels
Work on the project began back in 2021 and building it cost around 47.68 billion yuan, roughly 7 billion dollars. A large part of the line passes through extremely tough mountainous terrain. The standout detail is that more than 90 percent of the entire route was built using bridges and tunnels, keeping damage to the surrounding natural landscape to a minimum.
A fresh boost for business and travellers
The bullet train will make movement between western, central and eastern China far smoother. Goods will move faster, industries will pick up pace, and fresh investment is expected to follow. Companies in the Shiyan region, well known for its automobile industry, will now be able to reach the rest of the country far more quickly. Historic and tourist spots are also likely to see a rise in visitor numbers.
Eyeing a bigger network by 2030
The project is part of China's 2026 to 2030 transport development plan. The government keeps expanding its high-speed rail network so that even far-flung parts of the country can be linked to fast, modern train services. The new bullet train is seen as playing a key role in giving China's economy, tourism and regional growth a fresh burst of momentum.
