Typhoon Saudel has caused extensive devastation across the southern coastal regions of China, prompting urgent rescue operations and mass evacuations. Severe downpours have triggered widespread flooding throughout Fujian and Guangdong provinces, submerging major roadways, trapping vehicles, and inundating residential neighborhoods. In the village of Jinxi, located within Fujian province, rapid floodwaters caused a three-story brick house to collapse completely. This regional climate emergency comes shortly after violent flash floods in Nepal claimed more than 1,400 lives and left significant destruction across Tibet.
Severe Inundation and Ongoing Emergency Operations
In Fuding city, a prominent tea-producing center in Fujian known for its lush vegetation, floodwaters reached waist-height levels in numerous quarters. Emergency crews and firefighters were forced to wade through deep torrents to reach stranded residents, focusing priority efforts on extracting elderly citizens from submerged homes. In nearby Jinxi village, surrounded by steep topography, mountain runoff rushed straight into inhabited zones, causing catastrophic structural damage to local properties.
The crisis intensified in the city of Putian after heavy rainfall caused a local dike to breach. The sudden surge of water inundated residential sectors, resulting in the collapse of over 100 houses and leaving multiple residents missing. Floodwaters inundated vital expressways and damaged critical bridge infrastructure, crippling local transit networks. In response, municipal authorities closed all educational institutions, suspended public transportation services, and implemented high-level emergency flood containment protocols across affected districts.
Unprecedented Frequency of Tropical Storms
Typhoon Saudel made landfall on the Fujian coastline on Thursday morning after re-strengthening over the waters of the South China Sea. This marks the seventh typhoon to hit mainland China during the current storm season. Notably, the city of Yuhuan in eastern Zhejiang province has endured three distinct typhoon landfalls within a span of roughly two months, a pattern characterized by the China Meteorological Administration as exceptionally rare.
Relocation efforts have been underway across Zhejiang and neighboring coastal provinces since late August, leading to the movement of hundreds of thousands of individuals into temporary shelters. Within Fujian province alone, local authorities have successfully evacuated more than 83,000 people from high-risk flood zones and vulnerable housing structures.
El Nino Linked to Intensified Storm Trajectories
Meteorological researchers attribute this unusual pattern of typhoon frequency and intensity to the influence of El Nino conditions. Under standard weather dynamics, tropical cyclones typically originate in the western portions of the Pacific Ocean. However, current observations indicate that storms are forming significantly further east, forcing them to traverse much longer distances over open oceanic waters before reaching land.
According to Professor Hui Su from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, this eastern formation allows tropical systems to absorb vastly greater amounts of heat and moisture over extended marine routes. Consequently, by the time these atmospheric systems make landfall across China and broader South Asia, they carry significantly heightened destructive capability and wind capacity.
