Indian archery witnessed a historic milestone at the Asian Games 2026 as 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod captured the gold medal in the women's individual recurve event. With this triumph, she became the first Indian female archer ever to secure a medal in this discipline at the continental showpiece. Facing South Korea's formidable Oh Yejin in the title clash, the encounter stretched across five intense sets before deadlocking and heading into a dramatic shoot-off, where the teenager held her composure to land the decisive arrow and seal the championship.
The landmark victory finally ended a 48-year drought for Indian archery that stretched back to 1978, marking the nation's maiden podium finish in the women's individual recurve category. Alongside rewriting history books, the gold medal finish confirmed her qualification for the upcoming Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.
Overcoming an Early Deficit With a Gritty Third-Set Fightback
The gold medal contest did not begin smoothly for the young Indian archer. Following the completion of the opening two sets, she found herself trailing 3-1. Oh Yejin claimed the first set with sharp marksmanship, while the second set concluded with shared points, placing significant pressure on Kumkum ahead of the remaining three sets of the final.
Confronted with a must-win scenario to keep her gold medal hopes alive, she exhibited immense poise in the third set. Kumkum edged out her South Korean competitor with a narrow 30-29 scoreline, successfully leveling the overall match score at 3-3 and turning the momentum back in her favor.
High-Stakes Fifth Set Forces a Decisive Shoot-Off
The intense battle swung once more in the fourth set, as Oh Yejin capitalized to move ahead 5-3. Kumkum entered the fifth and final set facing an outright elimination scenario, requiring an error-free performance to stay in contention.
Under intense scrutiny, she delivered under pressure by posting a perfect 10. The South Korean archer slipped slightly with a score of 9, which proved costly and dragged the cumulative score to a 5-5 tie. That deadlock pushed the final into a sudden-death shoot-off. Given a single arrow to determine the continental champion, Kumkum calmly struck a perfect 10. Her opponent could only manage an 8, handing India the gold medal and sealing an unforgettable individual achievement.
A Tally of Three Medals at the 2026 Continental Games
This individual gold marked Kumkum Mohod's third overall medal and second gold at the Asian Games 2026. Earlier in the tournament, she stood atop the podium alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma after winning the women's recurve team event. On October 2, she partnered with Dhiraj Bommadevara to earn a silver medal in the mixed team recurve competition, capping off a remarkable campaign across team and individual formats.
