The Indian cricket team is facing intense criticism from all quarters after a disappointing performance in the five-match T20 series on English soil. Throughout the tour, the Indian lineup appeared heavily outclassed by a dominant England side. While various cricket experts have offered diverse opinions on this lackluster showing, Indian player Cheteshwar Pujara has shared a detailed analysis highlighting the fundamental issues that plagued the team.
Middle-Order Failures and Missing All-Rounders
Speaking to JioHotstar, Pujara compared the composition and depth of both squads. He observed that England benefited greatly from reliable contributions from their lower-middle order, specifically players coming in at positions five, six, seven, and eight. In contrast, India fielded Tilak Varma at number five and Shivam Dube at number six, but neither player could match the impact or consistency of their English counterparts.
Furthermore, the complete lack of a proper all-rounder severely disrupted the balance of the Indian side. This issue became prominent after star player Hardik Pandya, who had previously featured in matches against Afghanistan, suffered an injury right before the tour. To compound India's troubles, Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was drafted into the squad, also sustained an injury prior to the team's departure, leaving India without viable all-round options on the field.
Unacceptable Fielding Standards in T20 Cricket
Pujara was particularly critical of India's fielding display during the matches. He pointed out that while it is understandable for a young and evolving team to experience inconsistent days with batting or bowling, sloppy fielding is entirely inexcusable in the modern game. In the shortest format of cricket, where single runs and dropped catches can swing the momentum in seconds, fielding plays a decisive role.
India's substandard efforts on the field remained a recurring issue throughout the series, raising major concerns for the team management. This series of errors culminated in a heavy 4-0 defeat against England. This loss followed another setback earlier in the tour, where the Indian squad suffered consecutive defeats in both matches played against Ireland.
