Indian golfers delivered an extraordinary performance at the Asian Games 2026, headlined by a groundbreaking triumph in the women's competition. 23-year-old Pranavi Urs from Mysuru produced a composed and resilient display across four grueling days to claim the individual gold medal. With this historic achievement, she became the first Indian woman ever to win an Asian Games gold medal in golf, while simultaneously spearheading India's silver medal finish in the team event.
Nerves of Steel on the Final Hole to Secure a Narrow Victory
The four-round tournament tested endurance and mental stamina, and Urs showed remarkable composure under intense pressure. She completed the four rounds with an aggregate score of 15-under par. On the 18th hole of the championship, she safely negotiated a par to protect her slender one-stroke advantage and avoid a potential playoff. Behind her, Shannon Tan of Singapore and Yin Ruoning of China finished tied at 14-under par, sharing the silver medal honors.
Overcoming an Early Setback with Brilliant Birdies
The final round was not without high drama. Urs faced severe adversity early on when she suffered a triple bogey on the third hole. Rather than allowing the round to slip away, she regrouped instantly and responded like a champion by draining three birdies to balance her scorecard. She posted an even-par 70 on the final day, finishing the four days of competition with a combined score of 15-under 265. Prior to this historic victory, India's sole individual golf gold medal at the continental event had come in the men's category through Shiv Kapur during the 2002 Busan Games.
Team Silver Caps a Memorable Campaign for India
Urs' stellar showing was matched by strong collective teamwork alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar. The Indian trio combined for an overall total of 14-under 546 to capture the team silver medal. Ashok fired an impressive 67 in her closing round, while Dagar recorded a 77. The team gold medal went to China, whose golfers put together a dominant 22-under 538 total to secure the top spot on the podium.
From Childhood Ambition to Continental Glory
Urs took up golf at the tender age of six, drawing inspiration and constant encouragement from her father and brother. She was previously part of the Indian squad at the 2023 Asian Games, where the team suffered heartbreak by finishing in fourth place and narrowly missing out on a medal. Overcoming that disappointment, her breakthrough in 2026 marked a complete turnaround on the continental stage. Her triumph also elevated India's gold medal tally at the 2026 Asian Games to 18, with more podium opportunities still ahead.
