Discovery During Chawl Redevelopment
The incident surfaced across a chawl property spanning approximately 2,000 square feet in Malad. The landowner had recently initiated formal steps to clear out occupants and begin structural renovation work across the premises. During the clearance process, workers discovered a large operational cooling appliance containing human remains. Police personnel were dispatched to the site, secured the location, and transferred the body from the freezer for official examination while initiating inquiries with all parties tied to the property.
Natural Causes and Overseas Cryopreservation Plans
Police authorities clarified that the initial investigation points to natural causes rather than any criminal wrongdoing. The elderly man had been battling cancer and subsequently suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in June 2022. His daughter, who resides in Andheri West, had formally obtained a medical death certificate from an attending doctor at the time of his passing. Driven by profound grief and emotional attachment, she sought avenues to prevent letting go of her father permanently.
Her long-term objective centered on transporting the body abroad. The family had initiated contact with an American facility providing specialized body-preservation services. Over the intervening years, the daughter maintained communication with the overseas agency, gathered legal advice on cross-border biological transfers, and systematically saved financial resources required to execute the logistical arrangements. When the local facility ceased its normal operations about a month ago, the empty cooling unit served as the temporary holding spot.
Tenancy Chains and Legal Procedures
The landowner stated to investigating officers that he had leased the chawl space to an individual named Abdul Rahman in early 2022. Rahman later transferred day-to-day administration to another management group operating a clinic and daycare center. Operators of that center maintained they possessed no prior knowledge regarding the contents of the freezer unit.
