A meticulously planned murder disguised as an unfortunate household accident has been unraveled by the police in Nagpur, Maharashtra. A 35-year-old woman was killed inside her residence following an argument over marriage, and an elaborate scheme was staged to mislead investigators into believing she had suffered a fatal electric shock. The perpetrator placed an electrical heating appliance beside the body to simulate an accidental electrocution. However, a detailed post-mortem examination exposed the deception, revealing that the victim succumbed to severe head trauma, leading to the swift capture of the suspect in Jalgaon within hours.
A Fifteen-Year Relationship and Marital Disputes
The victim, identified as 35-year-old Kavita, worked at a local mess and resided in the MIDC area with her husband and two daughters, aged 11 and 13. The accused has been identified as 35-year-old Javed Sheikh Sahid Manniyar, a resident of Shiv Colony in Raver tehsil of Jalgaon district. Javed earned his livelihood working as an air conditioner technician and electrician in Nagpur. The two had known each other since their college years and had maintained a romantic involvement spanning nearly 15 years. During their youth, their relationship faced stiff resistance from family circles due to their differing religious backgrounds, prompting both individuals to marry other people.
Despite building their respective families, their connection continued uninterrupted over the years. Kavita's sister was married in Jalgaon, which provided ongoing opportunities for communication and contact. Whenever Kavita's husband traveled out of town for work, Javed would visit her at her Nagpur home. Over recent months, friction began to develop between the two. Javed, being married, had started distancing himself and ignoring her. In contrast, Kavita was persistently pressing him to formalize their relationship through marriage, triggering repeated arguments between them.
The Crime Scene and the Staged Electrocution
On Sunday morning, Javed arrived at Kavita's home, finding her alone. Her husband had left for his native village on work-related commitments, while her two young daughters had gone to stay at their uncle's residence. As evening approached, the dispute concerning marriage reignited with greater intensity. The altercation escalated to violence when Javed allegedly struck Kavita on the head with a heavy object, causing fatal trauma that killed her on the spot.
Facing the consequences of the crime, Javed utilized his technical background as an electrician to fabricate an accident scene. In an attempt to mislead authorities into treating the death as an electrocution, he used a room heater to deliver electrical shocks and burn the victim's body. He then set an immersion water heater near the body, positioning it as though she was heating water when she accidentally came into contact with live current. Having arranged the staged setting, the accused fled the city during the night aboard a train bound for Jalgaon.
Daughters Discover the Body as Autopsy Exposes the Lie
The incident came to light on Monday morning when the victim's daughters returned from their uncle's house. Discovering their mother unresponsive alongside the electrical appliance, family members and neighbors initially assumed that she had met with a fatal domestic accident caused by an electrical shock. However, routine police procedures and the subsequent post-mortem evaluation quickly dismantled this narrative.
Forensic doctors conducting the post-mortem found critical evidence of heavy blunt force trauma to the victim's skull. Medical experts confirmed that the impact of a blunt weapon was the actual cause of death, rather than any fatal electrical discharge. The examining medical team suspected that the burns and the presence of the immersion heater had been deliberately orchestrated after the death to simulate an accident and mislead law enforcement officers.
Digital Trail Leads Investigators to Jalgaon
Armed with the findings of the post-mortem report, MIDC police registered a murder investigation and focused on the victim's immediate circle. An inspection of Kavita's mobile phone call detail records revealed that she had been in frequent and regular contact with Javed Sheikh. Call records demonstrated that communication had taken place between them right around the time of the incident.
Detectives tracked Javed's phone signal to Jalgaon and coordinated with local law enforcement to execute a targeted raid. Within hours, the suspect was apprehended and brought back to Nagpur on Tuesday. Under sustained police interrogation, Javed admitted to committing the murder following the argument over marriage and detailed how he attempted to disguise the homicide as an accidental electrical mishap.
