A tragic incident unfolded in Thane where three friends lost their lives after entering the waters of the local creek near the Ganesh immersion ghat in the Retibunder area. This specific location is routinely used every year for the immersion of Ganesh idols during the festive season. The individuals stepped into the water unaware of the dangerous currents and sudden depth variations, causing them to drift into deep areas and submerge one after another. The unfortunate event has cast a shadow of grief over the local community and raised pressing concerns regarding water safety near the highway stretch.
Emergency response teams rush to the accident site
The accident occurred along the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, and authorities were alerted immediately after bystanders noticed the youths struggling in the water. Local residents who witnessed the unfolding tragedy quickly dialed emergency services to report the drowning. In response, teams from the Kalwa police station, Narpoli police station, fire department, disaster management cell, and the Thane Disaster Response Force or TDRF rushed to the spot without delay. Realizing the gravity of the situation, rescue personnel immediately launched a comprehensive search operation in the murky waters of the creek.
Bodies recovered after a four-hour grueling search
According to official records, the distress call was received on August 30, 2026, at approximately 3:08 PM, stating that three residents hailing from the Thakurpada locality in Mumbra had ventured into the creek and failed to resurface due to the unmeasured depth. TDRF personnel and local divers conducted an intensive search operation inside the creek that lasted for roughly four hours. Despite the challenging conditions and difficult currents, the rescue teams persevered until they finally managed to pull all three individuals out of the water.
Hospital doctors declare victims dead upon arrival
Immediately after being retrieved from the creek, the three victims were rushed via ambulance to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Upon arrival, the attending medical team examined them and officially pronounced all three dead. The deceased individuals were subsequently identified as Alam Sayed aged 42, Rizwan Sayed aged 42, and Sahil Polandas aged 30, all of whom resided in the Thakurpada neighborhood of Mumbra. The Kalwa police have initiated further inquiries and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
