In a major turn of events in the high-profile Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj, Mohammad Armaan, a sharp shooter linked to the Atiq Ahmed gang who had been eluding the Uttar Pradesh police and special task force for three years, has been traced to Gaya Central Jail in Bihar. Carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his capture, Armaan was found already lodged in prison in connection with a separate local incident, prompting authorities to initiate extradition proceedings to bring him to Uttar Pradesh for interrogation.
Prayagraj Police Confirm Identity Through Jail Records
Following specific inputs regarding his imprisonment in Bihar, a team of police personnel from Dhoomanganj police station in Prayagraj reached Gaya on September 30. Coordinating with the local prison administration, investigators scrutinized entry logs, past case dockets, and inmate identification profiles. The visiting team confirmed his identity, clicked his latest photographs, and obtained his fingerprints to complete biometric validation. Having formally established that the inmate was indeed the wanted operative from the Prayagraj shootout, Uttar Pradesh police initiated legal procedures to secure his custody.
Surrender in Gaya Following Local Shooting Incident
Armaan is a native of the Kathokar Talab locality in Gaya city. Immediately after the shootout in Prayagraj, he slipped out of Uttar Pradesh to evade the Special Task Force and returned to his hometown. Soon after arriving in Gaya, his name surfaced in a local criminal case involving gunfire directed at a local vendor named Bholu Egg-seller near his neighborhood. Fearing an aggressive crackdown by local police, Armaan chose to surrender before a local court in Gaya. The court remanded him to judicial custody, and he was sent to Gaya Central Jail on February 27, 2023. Consequently, he had been serving time behind bars since three days after the Prayagraj crime, even as investigative agencies in Uttar Pradesh conducted widespread searches across multiple territories unaware of his confinement.
Allegations Surrounding the 2023 Prayagraj Shootout
The incident dates back to February 24, 2023, when lawyer Umesh Pal and his two assigned police gunners were shot dead in broad daylight in Prayagraj. Following the incident, forensic analysis of area CCTV surveillance footage and witness accounts led investigators to identify Armaan as one of the active shooters at the scene. Investigators allege that Armaan was riding a motorcycle during the assault, carrying co-accused Guddu Muslim on the pillion seat. According to police files, while Armaan maneuvered the two-wheeler through the streets, Guddu Muslim lobbed explosives and fired weapons toward the victims before escaping the location.
Transit Remand Plea Filed in Gaya Civil Court
As the murder probe deepened, Armaan was placed on the priority wanted list, and the state administration sanctioned a bounty of Rs 5 lakh for actionable information leading to his arrest. Following subsequent police encounters involving Asad and Ghulam, authorities directed significant focus toward locating Atiq Ahmed's wife Shaista Parveen and explosives handler Guddu Muslim. During that entire interval, Armaan stayed completely off the radar of the Special Task Force, with no electronic tracks or physical movements recorded. Upon discovering his confinement, Prayagraj police moved a formal application before the Gaya Civil Court on October 1 seeking transit remand. The prosecution aims to transport him to Prayagraj to question him regarding the operational network, weapon logistics, and remaining absconding figures. The application is presently under judicial hearing.
Family Claims Innocence as Legal Counsel Flags Safety Concerns
Conversely, Armaan's parents, Shamim and Asgari Khatoon, have contested the police narrative, maintaining that their son is entirely innocent. His parents stated that he had been residing in Prayagraj merely as an ordinary manual worker doing odd jobs and has never been a career criminal. His family has submitted representations before the court. Concurrently, Armaan's defense counsel, Lalit Kumar Gupta, voiced strong apprehensions regarding his physical safety should he be shifted to Uttar Pradesh. The lawyer argued that due to life threats, all proceedings and interrogations should be managed remotely through video conferencing, though the court did not grant that plea. The advocate further asserted that Armaan is being falsely implicated in the Uttar Pradesh case and declared plans to file a writ petition before the Patna High Court once certified copies of the trial court orders are secured. Armaan remains in Gaya Central Jail as both sides await the court's definitive verdict on the transit remand petition.
