Another brazen daylight robbery in Delhi has raised serious questions about the capital's law and order. In north-west Delhi, around 3 pm on Wednesday, two armed men riding a motorcycle snatched a bag containing ₹1.5 crore from the employees of a real estate company and made their escape. The entire incident was carried out in just a few seconds, leaving the victims no time to react.
How the Cash Delivery Began
According to police, the two employees work as cashiers at a real estate company located in Paschim Vihar in west Delhi. The company's owner had instructed them to carry ₹1.5 crore in cash and deliver it to a business establishment at Kucha Ghasiram in Chandni Chowk. The two employees set out on a scooter with the money at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday.
Robbers in Red Helmets Blocked the Way
The preliminary investigation has revealed that as the two employees were heading from Ashok Park Metro Station towards Inderlok, two young men on a red motorcycle came up close to them. Both were wearing red helmets. The robbers first overtook the scooter to block its path, and then one of them pulled out a pistol and threatened the employees. Immediately afterwards, the bag full of cash was snatched away.
Fled After Warning Against Resistance
The victims told police that the robbers had warned them of serious consequences if they resisted or raised an alarm. After committing the crime, the two accused fled on the motorcycle towards Punjabi Bagh. Right after the incident, the employees informed their employer and the police.
Several Teams Join the Probe
As soon as the information came in, senior police officers and the local police station team reached the spot. Statements from the victims were recorded and an investigation was launched. Police are examining footage from CCTV cameras installed in the surrounding areas and along the routes, in order to trace the escape route and identity of the accused. Along with the district police, Crime Branch teams have also been deployed to investigate the case. Investigating agencies suspect that the robbers had prior knowledge of the cash being transported. For this reason, police are also probing the possibility of an inside tip-off or the involvement of someone close to the company.
Major Robberies in the Area Before
Notably, in recent months several major robberies have come to light in Chandni Chowk, Sarai Rohilla, Gulabi Bagh, Bara Hindu Rao and nearby commercial areas. In March, two employees travelling from Kirti Nagar to Chandni Chowk were robbed of ₹50 lakh. Last year, too, incidents involving the loot of crores of rupees and valuables took place in the Chandni Chowk and Lahori Gate areas.
Questions Over Safe Cash Transport
Such repeated incidents have sharply heightened concerns about the safe transport of large amounts of cash through crowded commercial areas. Police say every aspect of the case is being investigated and efforts are on to nab the accused as soon as possible.
