Amid rising concerns over spiking onion prices and availability pressures within the national capital, a much-needed relief measure has been announced for residents. The central government has officially decided to allocate 1,000 metric tonnes of onions specifically for Delhi to ease the ongoing market strain. This subsidized stock will be retailed to the public at an affordable rate of 35 rupees per kilogram. The distribution responsibility has been handed over to the Delhi government, which will channel the supplies through fair-price shops and government ration outlets so that everyday citizens can easily access them.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the Delhi administration will not allow any artificial scarcity of onions to develop anywhere in the metropolis. The primary objective of the administration is to maintain a steady and adequate supply of essential food commodities, ensuring that everyday kitchen staples like onions do not slip beyond the financial reach of common households.
Mobile Vans Deployed Across All 13 Districts
In addition to traditional fair-price outlets, onions will also be vended through dedicated mobile vans stationed across all 13 administrative districts of Delhi. These specially designated vehicles will traverse various neighborhoods and residential clusters, offering onions at the uniform subsidized rate of 35 rupees per kilo. The strategic intent behind this mobile distribution model is to reach localities where residents might face physical barriers in accessing conventional ration shops.
Authorities anticipate that this proactive step will significantly boost onion availability across different corners of the city. Furthermore, it is expected to exert downward pressure on open-market pricing, thereby compelling private traders to moderate their rates and shielding consumers from exorbitant costs.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reiterated that the Delhi administration is maintaining round-the-clock vigilance over shifting market prices and daily inventory levels. The government remains fully committed to preempting any potential shortfalls, guaranteeing that citizens continue to receive essential nutritional supplies at reasonable and pocket-friendly rates.
Kanda Express Arrives In Delhi Loaded With Nashik Onions
Prior to this, in a major push to augment supply networks and tame runaway prices across Delhi and adjoining areas, the maiden Kanda Express carrying 453.65 tonnes of onions from Nashik, Maharashtra, reached Delhi on Friday. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare elaborated that the special train comprising 21 wagons brought the massive consignment into the national capital during the morning hours. She noted that this stored Nashik produce is being retailed across the Delhi-NCR region at the subsidized benchmark of 35 rupees per kilogram. Additionally, she revealed that a portion of this stock is being diverted to neighboring urban centers including Chandigarh, Ludhiana, and Jammu. Currently, the central government maintains a robust buffer stock of approximately 1.21 lakh tonnes of onions under its Price Stabilization Fund.
