A deeply disturbing incident has emerged from a government school located in East Vinod Nagar, Delhi, where a ten-year-old girl passed away while undergoing medical treatment. Following her unfortunate demise, grief and anger boiled over among family members and locals, who staged a massive protest outside the school gates on Monday morning. Acknowledging the extreme sensitivity of the situation, the Delhi administration immediately ordered an impartial inquiry into the matter.
Family allegations and sequence of events
According to the grieving relatives, the incident dates back to July 22. The family stated that the child had left her Kalyanpuri residence in fine health that morning. They alleged that when she failed to bring a textbook to class, the teacher scolded her and forced her to stand at the back of the classroom with her hands raised. The relatives claimed that the fear and stress triggered a rapid deterioration in her health. Furthermore, allegations surfaced that after the other students and the teacher left the room, the girl was left locked inside. When her grandparents eventually arrived at the school, she was discovered unconscious in an open area. She regained consciousness briefly to narrate her ordeal before fainting again, prompting an immediate rush to the hospital.
Medical findings and hospital statements
The child was initially admitted to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital and later shifted to IHBAS, where she breathed her last on August 27. However, medical professionals at IHBAS presented a different clinical perspective on the case. According to the doctors, the young student had been suffering for the past six months from SSPE, a highly severe and rare neurological disorder caused by a measles virus infection, which carries a mortality risk of up to 95 percent. The medical team stated that the progression of this underlying condition ultimately led to her death.
Administrative action and new safety measures
As the controversy gained momentum, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood announced on the social media platform X that a transparent investigation has been ordered. To ensure a fair probe, the teacher involved was immediately transferred. The administration made it clear that strict action will be taken if any negligence is uncovered during the inquiry. Learning lessons from this tragic episode, the Delhi government announced a major preventive initiative. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared that under a pilot project, dedicated medical rooms will be set up across 100 government schools in the capital to provide first aid, basic healthcare support, and counselling to children. An initial budget of 5 crore rupees has been allocated for this scheme, which will eventually be expanded to cover 1,086 schools.
