Thick clouds have rolled over Delhi NCR since early morning today, with a light haze hanging in the air that gives the weather a monsoon like look. Yet the heat has refused to ease, with sticky humidity keeping temperatures pinned around 38-39 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department keeps signalling that the monsoon is finally set to arrive over the capital, bringing rain along with it. Here is what the IMD's forecast for July 7 actually says.
Light rain likely from the morning itself
According to the IMD's local weather report, Delhi could see light rain starting this morning, accompanied by lightning and strong winds. The weather department expects some relief in temperature today, though the high humidity means that relief may not actually feel like much to people on the ground.
Monsoon activity expected to pick up
The India Meteorological Department says monsoon activity over Delhi could intensify on July 7, 2026, with some areas likely to see moderate to heavy rainfall. The sky is expected to stay overcast right from the morning, with thunder and strong winds blowing at 40-50 kilometres per hour. The maximum temperature could fall to around 32-34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to hover near 26-27 degrees Celsius. Because of the high humidity, though, even these lower readings are unlikely to bring much of a cooling sensation.
July 6 was the hottest July day in two years
Despite the monsoon season being well underway, Delhi has not yet received proper monsoon rain, and the weather has shown little sign of improving. The maximum temperature touched 38.6 degrees Celsius on July 6, making it the hottest July day the city has recorded in two years. From July 7 onward, though, rain intensity is expected to rise, which should bring the temperature down by 4-6 degrees Celsius and offer residents some relief from the heat. Mornings may see light rain or haze, while afternoons and evenings are expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall. With humidity levels ranging between 80 and 95 percent, the air will stay damp and muggy.
Yellow alert issued, rain expected till July 11
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for today. The department expects rain across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh between July 7 and July 11, with particularly good rainfall likely between July 7 and July 9. People planning to travel during this period have been advised to keep checking the latest updates from the weather department before heading out.
