Ahead of the peak festive shopping season, traders across Delhi have raised serious concerns over a major political congregation planned in the heart of the national capital. The Chamber of Trade and Industry has formally reached out to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, urging his party to defer its mega rally scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan. Business representatives warned that holding a massive gathering right before Dhanteras and Diwali could disrupt transactions worth up to Rs 10,000 crore across key wholesale and retail commercial hubs. Consequently, the traders body has petitioned that the public event be rescheduled until after Bhai Dooj on November 10.
Disruption Fears During Peak Festive Shopping
Commercial stakeholders argue that market activity surges dramatically in the days leading up to Diwali. Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry, stated in the communication that customer movement and wholesale dispatches spike ahead of the festival. According to the association, although a rally takes place on a single date, the associated police barricading, security bandobast, and sweeping traffic diversions create logistical bottlenecks that dampen market operations for three to four consecutive days.
Rs 25000 Crore Sales Expected Around Dhanteras
The festive schedule marks Dhanteras on November 6, Diwali on November 8, and Bhai Dooj on November 10. Commercial projections for Delhi estimate that Dhanteras alone generates roughly Rs 25,000 crore in sales across gold, silver, utensils, consumer electronics, textiles, dry fruits, sweets, automobiles, real estate, and festive gift merchandise. Retailers point out that consumer buying begins almost a full week prior to the actual festival date. Under these circumstances, business owners worry that logistical hurdles on November 1 will derail the critical sales momentum that merchants rely on for annual turnover.
Impact on 20 Major Commercial Hubs Around Ramlila Maidan
Within a five-kilometer radius of Ramlila Maidan lie some of India's most vital commercial nerve centers. The letter identifies key wholesale and retail districts including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Naya Bazar, Mori Gate, Bhagirath Palace, Chawri Bazar, Kinari Bazar, Dariba, Daryaganj, Kashmiri Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Jama Masjid, Karol Bagh, and Azad Market. These marketplaces act as central distribution points for supplying goods throughout the country.
The traders association pointed out that traffic restrictions, diversions, and crowd overflow would immobilize goods carriers, local merchants, and shoppers alike. Outstation buyers arriving via Old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations to make bulk festive purchases are expected to encounter severe accessibility issues reaching these wholesale lanes.
October Losses and Appeal to Political Outfits
Highlighting recent setbacks, Brijesh Goyal indicated that demonstrations, rallies, and route closures around Central Delhi, Connaught Place, and India Gate during October had already cost merchants approximately Rs 3,000 crore in lost trade. During those events, wholesale dispatches were halted and regular footfalls at retail counters dropped sharply. While the Chamber of Trade and Industry affirmed its respect for democratic expression and peaceful demonstration rights, it appealed to all political formations to avoid staging massive rallies near core trading districts until festivities conclude on Bhai Dooj. Traders now await the party leadership's response to their appeal.
