Delhi University has taken swift and strict administrative action following a tense altercation where a professor was allegedly slapped on campus. The university authorities moved quickly against Shubham Singh, a PhD research scholar at the Faculty of Law, placing him under immediate suspension and barring his entry from every campus affiliated with the university.
Morning Incident at Umang Bhavan
According to a notice released by the university proctor office on Monday, the altercation took place around 10:30 AM at Umang Bhavan. The accused student had enrolled in the Faculty of Law for his PhD under Phase-II during the 2024-25 academic session. The unexpected clash quickly drew widespread attention among students and faculty members alike.
CCTV Footage Captures the Slap
University authorities obtained crucial video evidence showing the sequence of events. Officials stated that the CCTV footage clearly captures the research scholar physically assaulting a professor by striking him. DU Proctor Manoj Kumar Singh confirmed that the incident unfolded on Monday morning, leading to the immediate formation of an inquiry committee. The official university order explicitly states that the student stands suspended from the Faculty of Law with immediate effect.
Campus Entry Restricted Under University Ordinances
Invoking the provisions of Ordinance XV-B under the Delhi University Act of 1922, the administration slapped a total campus ban on the accused scholar. This restriction bars him from setting foot in any institutional building or grounds managed by Delhi University. Officials emphasized that acts of physical aggression against teaching staff strike at the core of academic decorum and warrant immediate preventive measures.
Three-Member Independent Inquiry Panel Established
To unearth every detail surrounding the altercation, the administration has constituted a three-member independent inquiry committee. This panel is tasked with examining all dimensions of the incident and submitting its findings to the university authorities. Department of Chemistry professor Rajeev Gupta has been appointed to head the committee as chairman. Joining him as members are Vipul Singh from the Department of History and Sudha Singh from the Department of Hindi. The committee holds the mandate to review the case thoroughly, and further punitive steps will be decided based on its final submitted report.
Teachers Association Demands Strict Action
The incident has triggered sharp reactions from the academic community. The Delhi University Teachers Association expressed profound dismay over the alleged assault on the faculty member. DUTA formally wrote to Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, strongly condemning the episode and demanding exemplary punishment for the offender. The teachers body stressed that tolerating aggressive behavior toward educators within campus boundaries sets a dangerous precedent and requires an unequivocal response from the administration.
