In a major boost to military readiness in harsh winter terrains, Army Chief General Dheeraj Seth launched the indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel in New Delhi on Friday. Created through a joint collaboration between the Indian Army team and leading Oil Marketing Companies, this specialized fuel is engineered to enhance the movement, safety, and operational availability of combat and logistics vehicles in extreme cold conditions. Beyond its strategic military significance, the breakthrough technology is designed to benefit civilian populations in high-altitude zones, marking a key milestone in India's drive toward self-reliance.
Overcoming Sub-Zero Operational Challenges at High Altitudes
In high-altitude and snow-bound regions, conventional diesel suffers from cold-flow issues, thickening severely at low temperatures and clogging fuel filters, which frequently immobilizes vehicles. The newly introduced XWG Diesel directly resolves this bottleneck by remaining fluid and fully functional even at temperatures dropping to minus 42 degrees Celsius. Compliant with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications, this fuel can be seamlessly deployed across the Indian Army's existing fleet of vehicles without requiring any engine modifications or re-homologation processes.
Army Chief Praises Rapid One-Year Indigenous Innovation
Speaking at the launch ceremony, General Dheeraj Seth highlighted XWG Diesel as a "vital indigenous innovation" that will reinforce army mobility, operational readiness, and mission reliability during hostile weather conditions. He noted that the adoption of this specialized fuel eliminates the need for former makeshift procedures previously required to keep engine systems running during harsh winters, thereby directly improving soldier safety and morale. The Army Chief commended the combined team from the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies for accomplishing the development within a single year, expressing confidence that this ongoing partnership will yield specialized fuels for diverse operational demands in the future.
