Rekha Gupta Government Preps Winter Action Plan Against Delhi Air Pollution

With winter approaching, the Delhi government is gearing up to combat severe air pollution by upgrading pollution testing centers and installing CCTV cameras at petrol pumps.

As the winter season approaches and threatens to degrade the air quality in the national capital once again, the administration has initiated comprehensive preparations to curb vehicular pollution. The spike in smog and particulate matter during the colder months remains a persistent challenge, with vehicular emissions playing a major contributing role. To tackle this, authorities are overhauling the entire compliance and monitoring framework across the city.

Upgrading Pollution Checking Centers

To keep a strict vigil on high-emission vehicles, the government has laid out a plan to upgrade more than seven hundred pollution under control certification centers in a phased manner. The booths located at various fuel stations will get a complete makeover, alongside the installation of closed-circuit television cameras. This ensures continuous, real-time monitoring of the vehicle testing procedure, effectively sealing any loopholes or malpractices.

Strengthening Transparency in Certification

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that merely stopping vehicles randomly on the road is not enough to counter the massive challenge of urban air pollution. The entire certification ecosystem needs technological reinforcement and absolute transparency. Previously, commercial vehicles obtained fitness certificates from outdated centers, while private vehicle owners relied on makeshift booths at fuel stations. Both mechanisms are now being integrated with advanced digital infrastructure.

New Automated Testing Stations

To streamline fitness evaluations for commercial transport, the Delhi administration has operationalized two state-of-the-art automated testing centers situated in Takhad and Nand Nagri. These hubs utilize advanced machinery to conduct rigorous mechanical inspections. Each automated testing station is designed to handle roughly seventy-two thousand vehicles annually, allowing both facilities to inspect nearly one hundred forty-four thousand commercial vehicles every year.

Automated Fuel Restrictions at Pumps

The capital already enforces a strict policy denying fuel to any vehicle lacking a valid pollution certificate. To automate enforcement, fuel stations are now equipped with automatic number plate recognition cameras and public address systems linked directly to the transport department portal. Whenever a vehicle without valid paperwork attempts to refuel, the cameras capture the license plate instantly and trigger an automated audio announcement.
