The former official residence of Arvind Kejriwal, which became widely known during political debates as the 'Sheesh Mahal', is set to undergo a significant transformation into a prestigious state guest house and cultural center. Official sources within the Delhi government have confirmed that the Public Works Department (PWD) and the upper echelons of the administration have finalized the comprehensive blueprint for this redevelopment. Situated at 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines, the bungalow will soon serve as a primary facility for hosting government guests.
The Proposed New Framework
The government's new initiative involves utilizing the vacant bungalow as a state-run guest house, functioning similarly to the state 'Bhawan' facilities of various Indian states. This will provide a dedicated space for visiting ministers from other states, senior central government officials, and other state guests to stay in Delhi, with a set fee structure to be applied for these services. The facility is designed to be more than just an accommodation site. Plans include the integration of the rear portion of the property and adjacent construction to create a large complex, which will feature conference halls, meeting rooms, and a modern, state-of-the-art auditorium. This space will host literary events, art exhibitions, and various cultural programs. Furthermore, the development plan incorporates a spacious parking area and a modernized waiting room for visitors. There is also a proposal to establish a public canteen and cafeteria within the complex, allowing the general public to access and enjoy traditional cuisine.
Current Maintenance
Since Arvind Kejriwal vacated the premises, the bungalow has remained largely unoccupied. Despite its lack of residents, a team of approximately 10 staff members is actively engaged in the daily maintenance of the site. Their routine duties include regular cleaning and ensuring that electrical systems, including air conditioners and refrigerators, remain fully operational to preserve the integrity of the property.
A History of Controversy
The bungalow has remained at the heart of political contention due to the large-scale renovations undertaken during the tenure of Arvind Kejriwal. The Bharatiya Janata Party frequently targeted the residence, accusing the administration of extravagant spending and labeling it as a 'Sheesh Mahal'. In 2022, following directives from the then-Lieutenant Governor, the Delhi government's Vigilance Department initiated an investigation into alleged irregularities and escalating costs associated with the renovation work performed by the PWD. Furthermore, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the renovation process following a formal complaint alleging financial misconduct, which was filed by Vijender Gupta, the then-Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
