Mass Detentions Across Delhi Amid High Alert Over Jantar Mantar Demonstrations

Delhi Police enforced strict security and detained several opposition figures, activists, and protesters across the capital as train schedules faced major disruptions.

Massive security measures have been put in place across the national capital in response to planned demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The law enforcement agencies initiated preemptive actions throughout Delhi and surrounding border corridors to maintain public order and prevent potential disruptions. Prominent political leaders, civil society members, and various demonstrators arriving to participate in the gathering were taken into custody from multiple locations across the city. Heightened vigilance remains active at key transit hubs, sensitive intersections, and border checkpoints.

Detention of Political Figures and Activists

A sweeping police operation was conducted across several parts of Delhi, targeting leaders and members of various political parties. From South Avenue, police detained Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee alongside lawmakers Derek O'Brien, Dola Sen, and several other party representatives. In a parallel operation, Delhi government minister and AAP leader Gopal Rai was taken into custody along with legislator Veer Singh Dhingan and fellow party workers, before being escorted towards East Delhi. During his detention, Gopal Rai demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar, stating that public mobilization would continue despite administrative restrictions.

Simultaneously, party supporters assembled outside the residence of former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal were detained by security personnel. A group of legal professionals also demonstrated against Gyanesh Kumar, raising slogans before being taken into custody and transported to designated detention locations in East Delhi.

Airport Interceptions and House Detentions

Senior office-bearers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were intercepted immediately upon arrival in the capital. Party leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were detained directly inside their aircraft after landing at IGI Airport from Mumbai. When asked to accompany the police squad, Abhijeet Dipke requested permission to collect his luggage first. Prior to his flight from Mumbai, Dipke stated that he was prepared for arrest under statutes like UAPA or NSA, asserting that their campaign for democratic principles and transparent elections would proceed regardless of state action.

The CJP strongly condemned the airport detentions, describing the operation as an authoritarian measure aimed at curbing peaceful assembly and freedom of movement. The party called for the prompt and unconditional release of the three leaders. In their absence, CJP designated its organization in-charge, Ajinkya Shinde, to spearhead the protest at Jantar Mantar. Meanwhile, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained from his residence in Kendriya Vihar, Sector-56, Gurugram, at approximately 7:48 am by a police unit comprising around 50 personnel. In addition, CJP legal head Ratna Singh was detained from her residence.

Civil Society March and Scuffle in Connaught Place

In support of the scheduled demonstration, members of civil society organized a solidarity march originating from Dilli Haat towards Jantar Mantar. Notable figures including Neha Bora, Dipankar Bhattacharya, and Prashant Bhushan joined numerous citizens in the march to voice their collective stand. Following the march, several participants, including Neha Bora, were taken into custody.

Tensions escalated near Connaught Place adjacent to the PTI news agency building, where an incident of stone-pelting took place during confrontations between protesters and security personnel. One police personnel sustained injuries during the scuffle. Additional security contingents were immediately deployed to secure the vicinity and disperse gathering crowds.

Security Architecture and 20 Designated Detention Zones

Delhi Police segmented New Delhi into 20 distinct administrative zones, each mapped to a dedicated detention facility. All major sports stadiums across the capital were converted into temporary holding centers to manage the influx of detained individuals. Authorities confirmed that approximately 500 demonstrators arriving in groups were taken into preventive custody, alongside roughly 50 individuals with prior criminal records detained to prevent civil disorder.

Heavy security deployments consisting of the Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Pink Force were stationed at sensitive transit points, notably around the roundabout near Hotel Le Méridien. Aerial surveillance was maintained using specialized drones to monitor crowd patterns. DCP Special Cell Narra Chaitanya confirmed that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) had been enforced around India Gate, maintaining that the area remained peaceful under strict police oversight while urging citizens not to gather for unauthorized demonstrations.

Border Surveillance and Commercial Activity

Stringent vehicular checks were instituted along the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, where personnel conducted intensive verifications before permitting transit into the city. Senior officials, including Special CP Law and Order Zone-1 Devesh Chandra Srivastava, Joint Commissioner of Police Milind Mahadeo Dumbere, and DCP East Rajiv Kumar, personally inspected border arrangements and deployment readiness.

Despite the early tension, commercial hubs began showing signs of normalcy later in the day. Wholesale trading districts such as Kashmere Gate and Khari Baoli resumed business operations as shopkeepers opened their establishments and customer footfall gradually recovered.

Rail Network Disruptions and Service Restoration

Railway operations experienced significant disruption due to the prevailing law and order measures and logistical constraints. Northern Railway reported that 75 mail and express trains were cancelled. Among these, around 40 were return journeys from terminal stations, while roughly 35 services were cancelled due to non-availability of incoming train rakes delayed or halted en route to Delhi. All scheduled departures from Lucknow to Delhi up to 2:00 pm, including the Tejas Express, were cancelled, leaving Lucknow Charbagh station unusually deserted. Authorities later initiated measures to normalize services connecting New Delhi with eastern states including Bihar and West Bengal.

Official Statements and Political Reactions

Addressing the developments, BJP National Spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra stated that attempts by certain elements to disrupt peace in the capital had failed. He asserted that India continues to advance under stable governance, remarking that democratic resilience had overcome unlawful disruption.

Boarding a flight right after landing just to detain politicians feels way too far. If the authorities knew about the Jantar-Mantar gathering beforehand, why pull this stunt inside the aircraft instead of stopping them at the border? Is basic freedom of movement completely gone now?

Karan Malhotra@karan-malhotra·13m ago

Rohan, barging inside the plane to pull leaders out is crossing the line! Stopping them outside made sense, but arresting them inside the aircraft is a total mockery of democracy.
