A major discrepancy has surfaced in property registrations at the Badshahpur tehsil in Gurugram, Haryana, following a survey conducted by the Income Tax department. Tax authorities discovered that a single PAN card number, ABCDEF1234, was entered across 25,000 separate property registrations executed over the past two years. According to tax officials, this specific identification number was repeatedly cited to clear registrations involving exceptionally high-value real estate. To investigate the matter, the Directorate of Income Tax (I&CI) in Chandigarh has dispatched a seven-member special team of officers to the Badshahpur office, where an exhaustive inspection of registration records is underway.
Unreported Transactions and Flawed Filings Total Rs 55,000 Crore
The preliminary inspection highlighted that vast sums involved in high-end real estate dealings were withheld from statutory reporting systems. Around 12,000 properties, accounting for transactions worth nearly Rs 15,000 crore, were transacted without any intimation being shared with the Income Tax department. Furthermore, an assessment of 35,000 property transactions revealed that the deals were either never reported to tax authorities or were registered using erroneous PAN numbers. In total, irregularities across these property records have reached an estimated Rs 55,000 crore.
Scrutiny Over Local Revenue Officials and Administrative Lapses
As part of the inquiry, the seven-member investigation team is scrutinizing the actions and oversight of the tehsildar and naib tehsildar posted at the tehsil. The focus remains on uncovering complete documentation for every high-value transaction that went unreported. To prevent recurring lapses, Income Tax authorities have formally briefed the Chief Secretary of Haryana regarding the administrative gaps and highlighted the need for prompt corrective interventions across revenue registries.
Concerns Over Statement of Financial Transactions Compliance
The Income Tax department has received Statements of Financial Transactions (SFT) from the Haryana government up to May 2026, but officials noted that the submissions lack comprehensive transparency. Administrative records show that 140 tehsildars submitted their SFT data ahead of the stipulated deadline by Thursday, whereas 120 tehsildars typically file only right at the deadline. Tax authorities have urged that pending SFT filings be completed transparently and without delay, while demanding a thorough audit of all flagged property registrations to establish accurate and verified records.
