Customs officials stationed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport have uncovered a major smuggling operation involving precious gemstones and jewellery brought in from Bangkok. Acting on real-time spot profiling, surveillance officers identified an Indian passenger who landed at Terminal 3 on October 3 aboard flight AI2303 arriving from Bangkok. Prompt suspicion prompted the authorities to intercept the traveller before he could exit the customs clearance zone, initiating a thorough search of his luggage and belongings.
Over 3,200 Gemstones and Ornaments Recovered at Terminal 3
During the detailed physical inspection at the airport, officials discovered a cache of 3,200 pieces of valuable gemstones and finished jewellery concealed among the passenger's luggage. The market value of the items intercepted directly at the terminal was officially assessed at approximately ₹1,01,54,600. When subjected to questioning, the passenger admitted to importing the consignment from Bangkok into Delhi without declaring the cargo or paying the mandatory import duties, giving investigators immediate grounds to expand their enforcement drive.
Raid Yields 196 kg Rough Emeralds and Polished Rubies
Acting on disclosures made by the detained passenger, customs enforcement teams carried out a search operation on October 4 at a location linked to the accused. The raid yielded a substantial haul comprising 196.676 kilograms of blackish-green rough emeralds. In addition to the bulk raw stones, investigators seized 221 carats of cut and polished rubies alongside 45 carats of cut and polished emeralds. Crucial operational documents and other related materials were also recovered from the premises during the search.
Action Taken Under the Customs Act
According to customs authorities, the combined market valuation of the seized gemstones and jewellery across both recoveries stands at approximately ₹2,02,54,400. Enforcement teams placed the entire contraband under seizure in accordance with Section 110 of the Customs Act. Following established legal protocol, the accused passenger was formally arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act as investigators delve further into the logistics chain behind the operation.
Ongoing Surveillance Against International Contraband
The Indira Gandhi International Airport remains on high alert as customs and DRI units continue busting international syndicates attempting to bring in gold, illicit drugs, and prohibited wildlife products. In a separate incident on September 29, 2026, customs officers apprehended a passenger arriving from Hanoi carrying roughly 4.43 kilograms of ganja valued at around ₹1.55 crore, leading to an arrest under the NDPS Act. Frequent attempts to bring illegal goods and wild fauna from Bangkok have surfaced earlier as well, prompting authorities to interrogate suspects closely to unravel their wider cross-border connections.
