Prominent Bengali film star Rukmini Mallick, widely recognized by her screen name Koel Mallick, has stepped into the political limelight after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. On Monday, she filed her formal nomination as a BJP candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. With her entry into the parliamentary race, conversations around her film career have resurfaced, most notably the pivotal decision she made years ago regarding the Bollywood project that eventually catapulted Kangana Ranaut to stardom.
Refusing Anurag Basu's Romantic Thriller Over Intimate Sequences
Anurag Basu's acclaimed romantic thriller Gangster marked Kangana Ranaut's debut in Hindi cinema, bringing her widespread public recognition and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. However, Kangana was not the filmmaker's original choice for the female lead. The role was initially offered to Koel Mallick, who decided to walk away from the prestigious Bollywood launchpad solely due to the nature of the script.
Mallick turned down the project because it required intimate sequences. She was clear about her boundaries and felt uncomfortable performing bold scenes on camera, choosing to maintain her personal comfort level over a high-profile commercial entry into Hindi films. After Gangster hit theaters and became a certified success, Mallick playfully mentioned to director Anurag Basu that had she accepted the part, Bollywood might have missed out on a versatile talent like Kangana Ranaut.
Previous Political Assignment and Rajya Sabha Resignation
The daughter of veteran Bengali cinema actor Ranjit Mallick, Koel Mallick is not entirely new to parliamentary politics. Prior to aligning with the BJP, she served as a Rajya Sabha member representing the Trinamool Congress. Her tenure in the upper house was brief, spanning from April 6 to July 16. Following the defeat of the Mamata Banerjee-led party in the assembly elections, she tendered her resignation from the parliamentary seat. Her recent nomination now marks a fresh chapter in her legislative ambitions.
Box Office Successes and the Prestigious Mahanayak Samman
Born on April 28, 1982, Mallick earned the popular moniker of Tolly Queen across the Bengali entertainment sphere. Her acting career began in 2003 with the feature film Nater Guru, which achieved immediate commercial success at the box office. She went on to headline numerous hit productions, including Shubhodrishti, Mon Maane Na, Premer Kahini, 100% Love, Rangbaaz, and Paglu. Acknowledging her enduring artistic contributions, the West Bengal government honored her with the prestigious Mahanayak Samman in 2023.
Private Life and Marriage After Seven Years of Courtship
Despite her star status, Mallick has consciously kept her domestic affairs away from media glare. She tied the knot with Nispal Singh on February 1, 2013, following a relationship that lasted seven years. In 2020, she entered motherhood with the birth of her son, Kabir. Her family expanded further in 2024 when she welcomed a baby daughter.
