India's biggest medical entrance test, NEET UG, could soon see a major overhaul. A parliamentary committee has recommended that the exam be conducted in multiple phases and switched to a computer-based format, similar to how JEE is currently held. The panel's reasoning is straightforward, NEET currently has to accommodate roughly 20 lakh students sitting for the test on a single day, and shifting to a phased, computer-based system could make handling such a massive exercise far more manageable and secure.
What exactly has the panel proposed?
The parliamentary committee has also suggested holding separate entrance exams for MBBS, AYUSH and nursing courses instead of one common test for all three streams. The idea is that splitting candidates across different exams for different courses would bring down the number of students appearing for any single exam, ease pressure on exam centres and make the whole process simpler to manage.
How has the NTA responded?
According to sources, the National Testing Agency has pointed out that admissions to these different courses are currently decided purely on the basis of NEET scores, so running separate exams for each stream may not be practical. The NTA has also clarified that the final call on the committee's proposal rests with the Health Ministry, meaning the recommendation is still just a proposal and has not been implemented yet.
What is being done to make the exam more transparent?
The NTA is currently rolling out the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Committee in a phased manner, with the stated goal of bringing more transparency to the exam process and eliminating any scope for irregularities, so that candidates continue to trust the system.
