For years, Peak Design's Anchor Links system has been the undisputed standard for quick-release camera straps. By attaching small circular anchors to a camera's eyelets, photographers could effortlessly swap or remove straps on the fly. Now, camera bag maker Wandrd has introduced its own take on quick-release hardware, leveraging integrated magnets to refine the connection process. The company has officially launched its Magnetic Camera Strap system, promising faster attachment speeds and enhanced field security.
Magnetic Alignment via Torus Links and CoreLock
At the center of Wandrd's new system are circular eyelet anchors dubbed Torus Links. While similar in purpose to traditional anchor nubs, Torus Links feature a hollow doughnut-shaped center. When bringing the strap close to the camera, embedded magnets automatically draw the Torus Link into the strap's CoreLock receptacle. Once aligned, the CoreLock mechanism pinches into the center hole to lock the camera securely in place.
The integration of magnetic assistance simplifies alignment without sacrificing mechanical retention. "We're photographers ourselves, so we're constantly ideating, tinkering, thinking of ways that things can be better," said Wandrd cofounder Ryan Cope regarding the product's long development process.
198-Pound Weight Capacity and Visual Safety Indicators
Despite its quick-release convenience, the system is engineered for heavy professional gear. Each Torus Link is rated to hold up to 198 pounds. To safeguard equipment against wear and tear, Wandrd incorporated a two-tier color warning system inside the anchor cord, a safety feature originally popularized by Peak Design.
If the outer black sheath begins to fray, an inner yellow layer becomes visible, signaling that the Torus Link should be replaced soon. If wear progresses down to an inner red layer, users must cease using the link immediately. Wandrd backs the hardware with a two-year warranty.
Dual-Pinch Release Mechanism for Field Security
Unlike basic magnetic accessories that detach with a direct pull, Wandrd's system uses magnets purely for positioning rather than weight holding. Once the CoreLock engages, removing the strap requires pressing a dual-pinch mechanism on the connector. This prevents accidental release if the strap catches on clothing or gear during movement.
In practical use, the combination of magnetic guidance and dual-pinch locking speeds up workflow when changing camera positions. Photographers transitioning to low-angle shots can detach the strap quickly and reattach it virtually instantaneously using one hand, letting the internal magnets pull the hardware into alignment.
Single-Point Sling Layout and Liquid Nylon Construction
Wandrd included an integrated Torus Loop directly on the strap buckle, enabling a single-point sling configuration. By clipping one end of the strap into its own buckle loop, users create a closed torso loop. This leaves a single magnetic point available for the camera body. When unclipped to shoot, the strap remains resting across the user's torso without sliding off the shoulder.
For comfort, Wandrd spent two years engineering a custom liquid nylon tubular webbing. The fabric features softened outer edges designed to eliminate neck irritation during extended carry sessions. Furthermore, the connector assemblies avoid exposed metal surfaces, protecting delicate camera bodies and lenses from scratches during transit.
Pricing, Variants, and DIY Retrofit Kit
To accommodate photographers who prefer their existing straps, Wandrd offers a $29 DIY kit. This package allows users to install the Magnetic CoreLock system onto the ends of third-party or custom leather straps.
For complete setups, Wandrd has released three ready-to-use options: a 30-mm standard camera strap priced at $69, a 15-mm Lite strap available for $49, and a compact wrist strap priced at $39.
