To deepen bilateral defense cooperation and tactical synergy, the armed forces of India and Thailand have officially commenced the 15th edition of their joint military exercise, named 'Maitree'. A dedicated contingent from the Indian Army boarded a flight to Thailand on Monday to participate in the intensive training event. Scheduled from August 18 to August 31, the two-week drill is taking place at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp located in Surat Thani, Thailand.
Troop Composition and Participating Contingents
The joint exercise involves a total of 170 military personnel, split equally between the two participating nations with 85 soldiers from each side. The Indian contingent is primarily represented by troops from the renowned 9 Gorkha Rifles. On the host nation's side, the Royal Thai Army has deployed personnel from the 3rd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade, belonging to its 5th Division.
Tactical Focus on Counter-Terrorism Operations
Designed as a company-level joint training exercise, the drills are tailored to enhance operational readiness in jungle and semi-urban environments. The operations focus heavily on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism tactics under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. Throughout the two-week schedule, troops will undergo field exercises, tactical discussions, military lectures, and practical demonstrations, concluding with a comprehensive validation phase. Both forces will also display and exchange tactical insights on modern military equipment and combat technology.
Strategic Context and History of Exercise Maitree
The location of the exercise carries notable strategic significance due to its proximity to the Malacca Strait, one of the world's most critical maritime choke points. Exercise Maitree was first inaugurated in 2006 to establish a structured platform for sharing best practices and operational methodologies. The preceding 14th edition of the exercise was conducted in September 2025 at Umroi in Meghalaya, India. Through such continuous engagements, the defense forces of India and Thailand aim to fortify operational interoperability and long-term bilateral security relations.
