An Indian Army contingent has departed for Thailand to take part in the 15th edition of the joint military exercise MAITREE-XV, scheduled from August 18 to August 31, 2026. The two-week long bilateral exercise is taking place at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. This training exercise aims to strengthen military cooperation between India and Thailand, enhance counter-terrorism tactics, and improve operational capabilities across dense jungle terrain as well as semi-urban operational environments.

The joint military exercise involves equal representation from both armed forces, with 85 personnel each participating from the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army. The Indian contingent is primarily drawn from the 9 Gorkha Rifles, a regiment celebrated for its specialized infantry training and tactical efficiency in challenging terrains. On the other hand, the Royal Thai Army is represented by soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the 25th Infantry Brigade under its 5th Division. Throughout the event, both units will engage in company-level joint training, fostering direct tactical coordination among infantry squads and platoon leaders.

The primary focus of MAITREE-XV revolves around joint counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations designed for complex jungle and semi-urban settings. The current 15th edition at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani marks another milestone in expanding inter-service harmony, strategic trust, and defense partnership between the two Asian nations.
