In an effort to tackle persistent vehicular congestion and create safer infrastructure for pedestrians, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated a series of on-ground interventions across key transit corridors. Chief Executive Officer PC Meena carried out an extensive site inspection on Monday, examining ground realities along MG Road, the Sikanderpur junction, and IFFCO Chowk to assess pedestrian safety, encroachment removal, parking facilities, and the upkeep of civic amenities.
Foot Overbridges Near Malls and Dedicated Parking on MG Road
During the inspection of MG Road, PC Meena instructed officials to explore the feasibility of constructing foot overbridges near commercial malls. The corridor witnesses high footfall, and dedicated pedestrian bridges will allow visitors and commuters to cross safely without disrupting the continuous flow of vehicular traffic. Authorities were also directed to identify high-density entry and exit points along the stretch to streamline turning movements and reduce friction between pedestrians and vehicles.
To address unregulated roadside parking, officials have been asked to identify dedicated parking zones specifically for two-wheelers. The CEO also ordered the immediate removal of illegal overhead cables and unauthorised signboards, clearing of wild roadside shrubs, extensive green plantation drives, and urgent repairs to damaged manholes and safety bollards across the corridor.
Sikanderpur Traffic Study for Underpass or Elevated Corridor
Addressing the chronic bottleneck at Sikanderpur, GMDA is evaluating long-term structural options, including the construction of either an underpass or an elevated corridor. Traffic engineering experts will be engaged to examine current vehicular volumes and congestion points. Based on their findings, a detailed project report will be prepared to determine the most viable engineering intervention for uninterrupted vehicular movement.
While inspecting the entry point to MG Road from the Ghitorni side, instructions were issued to upgrade adjoining roads and restore green belts. The enforcement wing was directed to seize and clear construction materials dumped along the road edges to reclaim space for commuters and pedestrians.
Joint Planning with NHAI for IFFCO Chowk Overhaul
At IFFCO Chowk, one of Gurugram's critical arterial intersections, GMDA plans to collaborate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to formulate a comprehensive junction improvement blueprint. Traffic specialists will assess movement patterns to reduce vehicular pressure and improve crossing facilities for pedestrians. The redevelopment plan aims to optimise existing infrastructure while introducing targeted structural enhancements where necessary.
Dedicated Patrol Teams for Encroachment Control
To prevent footpath encroachments and ensure sustained monitoring, GMDA has formed dedicated patrolling units. These teams will conduct regular rounds along MG Road and surrounding areas to take prompt action against illegal vendors and roadside obstructions. The CEO stressed seamless coordination among all internal teams so that pedestrian safety, sanitation, structured parking, and public asset maintenance are executed as a unified initiative.
