Coping with the loss of a parent to a fatal disease is an immense emotional trial, yet transforming that personal grief into a broader social mission requires exceptional resilience. Indian Administrative Service officer Sonal Goel has set such an example. Following the passing of her father due to cancer in October 2023, she dedicated herself to building widespread public awareness around early detection and healthy living.
From Everest Base Camp to African Peaks
Hailing from Panipat in Haryana, the 2008 batch IAS officer is recognized for her administrative governance as well as her social advocacy. Her high-altitude campaign against cancer commenced with the Everest Base Camp trek in May 2026 and continued across the rugged slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. She emphasizes that early diagnosis and broad public education remain the most effective tools in tackling cancer, giving patients a critical advantage in treatment and recovery.
Overcoming Forest Fires on the Route to Stella Point
The expedition on Mount Kilimanjaro presented severe physical and logistical challenges. The climb initially began along the Lemosho route, but on the third day, a massive forest fire erupted near the Shira region, forcing the team to halt and turn back. Refusing to abandon her mission, she restructured the plan and restarted the ascent via an alternate route. Tackling the treacherous steep terrain of the Barranco Wall and braving freezing weather conditions, she pressed forward step by step. On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, she successfully reached Stella Point at an altitude of 18,829 feet and hoisted the Indian national flag.
Youth Advocacy: Choosing Aspirations Over Substance Abuse
From the peak of her expedition, Sonal Goel addressed the younger generation with an emphasis on choosing goals and constructive ambitions over destructive habits. She stressed that young citizens form the foundation of the country, requiring not just professional opportunities but also the mental fortitude to select wholesome lifestyles. Integrating physical fitness, constructive thinking, and freedom from harmful substances into her campaign, she aims to help youngsters channel their full vitality into fulfilling their ambitions.
Academic Journey and Securing AIR 13 in UPSC
Her career path remains a major source of motivation for civil service candidates across the nation. While studying at Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce, she resolved to pursue public service. She subsequently qualified as a Company Secretary and earned a degree in Law (LLB). Although her initial UPSC attempt did not lead to the interview round, she persevered while working as a Company Secretary. In her second attempt, she achieved All India Rank 13. Her public contributions have previously earned her recognition among NITI Aayog's 'Top 25 Women Transforming India' and the 'Web Wonder Woman' initiative on X.
