Political lines blur as BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain and Congress MLA Akram Khan become relatives

BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain's son Arbaaz and Haryana Congress MLA Akram Khan's daughter Afshan Khan have tied the knot. The wedding celebrations in Delhi saw the presence of prominent political figures from across party lines.

Pushing aside ideological differences, two prominent political families have forged a new relationship by becoming relatives through marriage. The alliance connects senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shahnawaz Hussain from Bihar and Congress MLA Akram Khan from Haryana. Afshan Khan, the daughter of Akram Khan, has married Arbaaz Hussain, the son of Shahnawaz Hussain, marking a union that has drawn considerable attention.

The nikah ceremony took place at the PSOI Club in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The couple solemnized their marriage three days prior to a grand reception hosted on October 26. The wedding events drew a host of high-profile political figures, including Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who attended the celebrations to bless the newlywed couple.

Afshan Khan shared several videos and photographs from the wedding festivities on her social media accounts. One particular video captures an emotional moment with her father, where Akram Khan reflects on how he used to bring toys for her as a child and has now brought her wedding attire. Another shared image shows Afshan presenting a wedding invitation to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Hailing from Khijri village in Yamunanagar district, Afshan Khan has completed her studies in mass communication. Her family has a deep-rooted history in politics spanning three decades. Her grandfather, Chaudhary Mohammad Aslam Khan, was elected as an MLA from Chachrauli in 1987 and 1991. Her father, Akram Khan, first won an election as an independent candidate in 1996. He served as the Minister of State for Home in Om Prakash Chautala's government in 1999 and later became the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly. In 2009, he won the Jagadhri seat on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket before joining the Congress party, subsequently winning the 2024 assembly election as a Congress candidate.

Meanwhile, the groom, Arbaaz Hussain, is engaged in an import-export business. His father, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, hails from Supaul in Bihar. Shahnawaz married Renu Sharma in 1994, and the couple has two sons, Arbaaz and Adeeb. Having won the Lok Sabha election from Kishanganj in 1999, Shahnawaz served as a minister handling food processing, coal, civil aviation, and textiles in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet.

The wedding reception held in Delhi on a Monday brought together influential leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition. Notable attendees at the reception included former President Ramnath Kovind, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP leader Nitin Naveen, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Manohar Lal Khattar, and Congress MP Deepender Hooda, alongside several other prominent political personalities from various parties.

Weddings are fine, but when these politicians hug on stage, they're just fooling the public. Behind the cameras, they are all cut from the same cloth.

Attended a friend's wedding at that exact same club where this happened. Politics is fine and all, but everyone hugs at weddings anyway.

Spot on, Ravikesh! No matter how much they fight in Parliament, politicians easily set aside their differences in personal life.

The political world always looks so harsh from the outside, but the people inside aren't like that when it comes to personal relationships. When I attended a high-profile wedding in Delhi a few years ago, I saw leaders who attack each other on stage hugging the moment cameras were off.

Spot on, Karan. Seeing these relationships behind the camera makes you realize that the political fights are just for the election stage.
