The continuous downpour forces snakes and other venomous creatures out of their underground burrows in search of dry areas. When these creatures come into unexpected contact with humans, snakebite cases inevitably follow. Consequently, Meerut-based Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College is currently witnessing a large influx of snakebite victims arriving for urgent medical attention.
Hundreds of Patients Arrive Monthly
Addressing this seasonal surge, Dr. Arvind Kumar, Head of the Medicine Department at LLRM Medical College, shared crucial insights regarding the situation. He stated that approximately 300 to 400 patients arrive at the medical facility every single month seeking treatment for snakebite incidents. These incoming patients are promptly provided with comprehensive medical care utilizing modern treatment facilities, and once fully recovered, they are discharged to return safely to their homes.
The Danger of Delaying Treatment
According to Dr. Arvind Kumar, the speed with which a snakebite victim is brought to a hospital directly determines their chances of a successful recovery. He pointed out that many people unfortunately waste critical time resorting to traditional faith healing, exorcisms, and other ineffective local remedies instead of rushing to a medical facility. Such delays severely hamper proper treatment, and in critical scenarios, make saving the patient's life an uphill battle.
Immediate Medical Intervention is Vital
The senior doctor has strongly appealed to the public to steer clear of any superstitions, myths, or faith healing practices following a snakebite. Instead of losing valuable time, individuals must seek immediate professional medical assistance. The affected person can be taken to the nearest Community Health Centre (CHC), Primary Health Centre (PHC), or district hospital. If required, specialized treatment can also be sought directly at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College.
Venomous Species Found in the Region
Dr. Arvind Kumar further elaborated that Meerut and the surrounding districts in western Uttar Pradesh are home to several highly venomous snake species. These notably include the cobra, Russell's viper (referred to locally as snail viper), and krait. The toxic effects of these various snake venoms differ significantly, and any delay in treating a venomous snakebite can quickly escalate into a life-threatening medical emergency.
Free Availability of Anti-Snake Venom
Medical experts emphasize that if a person is bitten by a snake, they must be transported to the nearest healthcare center without wasting a single second. Upon arrival, medical professionals conduct necessary evaluations and administer Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) as per the patient's clinical requirements. He highlighted that the state government ensures this critical treatment is provided completely free of cost across public health centers to guarantee timely medical intervention for all snakebite victims.
Precautions During the Rainy Season
Since the likelihood of encountering snakes multiplies significantly during the rainy season, people must exercise utmost caution both inside their homes and in surrounding areas. Ultimately, rather than wasting precious moments on unproven home remedies or faith healers, reaching a hospital immediately during a snakebite incident remains the single most important life-saving action. Securing timely medical care drastically improves the odds of avoiding severe complications.
