Early Adversity and Scant Resources
Born in Reta village within the rugged terrain of Chamba district, Seema's rise to international prominence defied steep odds. She grew up as the youngest of six children in a household severely constrained by financial hardship. The family faced a devastating blow in 2012 when her father passed away, leaving her mother, Kesari Devi, to shoulder the entire domestic burden alone. In the initial phases of her running journey, Seema did not even possess proper running shoes. Driven by an unyielding dedication to distance running, she made the difficult decision to leave her village while in the seventh grade, relocating to the SAI hostel in Dharamshala to pursue structured athletic training.
Mother Sacrificed Savings to Back International Debut
Her family's commitment was critical in sustaining her ambitions during lean years. In 2017, when Seema qualified to compete in the Asian Youth Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand, the family lacked the funds required to finance the trip. Determined not to let her daughter's talent go unrewarded, Kesari Devi broke her fixed deposit to cover the travel expenses. Seema justified that extraordinary faith by securing a bronze medal at the Bangkok tournament. On Thursday, as Seema took to the track in Japan, her mother sat glued to the television set back home, watching her daughter capture international honors.
Climbing the Ranks from Khelo India to the Continental Podium
Seema's formal athletic development accelerated after she joined the Khelo India scheme in 2018. Over the years, she built a formidable competitive record, capturing four national titles and securing a silver medal at the Asian Youth Olympics according to World Athletics archives. Earlier in 2024, she grabbed the 10,000m gold medal at the 17th Asian Cross Country Championship staged in Hong Kong. Heading into the current continental games, she had already registered a career-best timing of 32:02.43 in the 10,000m, an official personal best ratified by both the national athletics federation and global governing bodies.
