A sudden change in atmospheric conditions has brought early winter chill across Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours. The state witnessed fresh snowfall across its higher mountain reaches, accompanied by persistent rainfall across mid-hill and foothill regions. This sharp weather shift triggered a steep drop in daytime temperatures, with mercury levels sliding between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius across numerous parts of the hill state. The abrupt cold snap has compelled residents to bring out heavy winter bedding and woollens well ahead of schedule.
Sub-Zero Conditions in Tribal Belts and Sharp Plunge in Chamba
The impact of this fresh round of snowfall is most pronounced across high-altitude tribal regions. In Kukumseri, situated in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, the temperature plummeted below the freezing mark, solidifying the onset of harsh winter conditions in the valley. Meanwhile, Chamba recorded an astonishing drop in its maximum daytime temperature, falling roughly 14 degrees Celsius below normal levels for this time of year.
The sharp downswing in temperatures has noticeably affected morning and evening routines across both urban settlements and rural valleys. Cold gusty winds moving down the snowbound slopes have created intense shivering conditions, making day-to-day transit challenging for locals and seasonal travelers alike.
Rain and Snow Predicted Between October 13 and October 15
According to forecasts issued by the Meteorological Centre Shimla, intermittent precipitation is set to dominate the state from October 13 through October 15. The weather office indicated that higher mountain ridges are likely to receive further rounds of snowfall during this window. At the same time, several lower and middle altitude locations face risks of thunder, lightning strikes, and brisk surface winds.
Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Centre Shimla, stated that the state logged light to moderate rainfall over the previous 24 hours. Nihri in Hamirpur district recorded approximately 40 millimeters of precipitation, while towns across Shimla and Kangra districts also experienced steady rains that cooled the entire surrounding atmosphere.
Districts on Alert for Rain and High Altitude Snow
Meteorological predictions point to rain covering widespread parts of Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur between October 13 and October 15. These rain spells across valleys and low-lying plains are anticipated to push daily maximum temperatures down even further over the coming days.
Concurrently, elevated stretches across Kinnaur, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Shimla districts are anticipated to witness snowfall. Weather specialists noted that continuous accumulation of snow on the peaks, coupled with persistent moisture in lower belts, will heighten the cold wave feeling across tribal communities and mid-elevation valleys.
Gradual Clearing After October 16 with Sunshine Expected on October 17
Forecasters anticipate that the active weather disturbance will begin to subside after October 16, resulting in largely clearer conditions across Himachal Pradesh. Even so, scattered spells of rain could still affect isolated pockets in the mid-hill terrain during the transition phase. Widespread bright sunshine is expected to return across the state on October 17, providing much-needed respite from the prolonged chill.
In the state capital Shimla, Monday commenced with clear skies and bright morning sun before afternoon cloud cover rolled in, swiftly pushing temperatures down. Earlier rainfall had already pulled Shimla's maximum temperature down to 16.5 degrees Celsius, which is nearly 6 degrees Celsius colder than normal seasonal averages.
Wide Drop in Daytime Mercury Across Major Towns
Substantial temperature drops have been confirmed across various regional centers. While Una registered a maximum reading of 30.4 degrees Celsius, day temperatures across Bhuntar, Palampur, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi hovered between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. These numbers represent a dramatic reduction of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius below regular benchmarks, with Chamba standing out at 14 degrees below normal.
Meteorologist Sandeep Kumar Sharma pointed out that while locations experiencing momentary sunny spells could see temperatures briefly approach seasonal averages, incoming evening showers are set to renew the chill. The prevailing spell of rain and snow until October 15 will maintain biting conditions across the mountains.
